My aging Phenom 9550 2.2ghz is showing it's age and I've decided I need more HERTZ! :D

So anyway, I've got it down to these three CPUs (undecided on MB):
Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz
AMD Phenom II X4 975 3.66GHz Socket AM3 Black Edition
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition Processor 3.3GHz

I've looked at reviews, benchmarks and over clocking opportunities, but I'm not sure which to go for. The intel seems to come top in a lot of benchmarks I've seen, particularly gaming, an area the AMD chips appear to be lacking in from what I've read, but on the other hand I've read of people overclocking the 1100T to 4.2GHz, which in turn benchmarks it above a un clocked intel. The intel also benchmarked lower than the AMDs at 3D rendering, which is important as I do a lot of it I'm confident Maya can take advantage of the raw power of a 1100T. I also play the odd game too, so I wouldn't want to be disappointed in that area either.

Can anyone offer me some advice? At the moment I think I'm leaning towards the 1100T, purely down to the fact that it looks as if it overclocks well and is cheaper than the intel.

Info/experiences appreciated

I would always buy a chip geared around my main interest, in your case rendering.

The 1100t will still be more than adequate for all your odd gameplay - as long as it's coupled with a suitable gfx card.

Having said that if you're thinking of overclocking then the 2600K is a stonking CPU. Your almost guaranteed a 4.4 clock with just a few minor BIOS tweaks (probably the same with the 1100t, too - decsions).

I, personally, would dismiss the 975 from the list and just be looking at the 1100t or the 2600K.

Thankfully my graphics are a bit more up to date than my processor! :D For a pro card the Quadro 2000 is fine for the odd bit of gaming.

Overclocking sounds very appealing, is 4.4 out of the 2500k on stock cooling? Don't think I've read of a 1100T above that.

But isn't a 1100T, over clocked, going to be quicker than then intel, even if it were up to 4.4?

CPUs got too complicated after they got pass 233mhz for me :S

Actually, as above - i misread the 2600K as a 2500K (edited my post.) D'oh!

If you can afford the extra £70 odd pounds the 2600K is the winner - but if money is tight then wait for the bulldozer, as suggested, or if it's needed right now get the 1100T it's still a mightyly chip.

Sorry, i'm obviously not fully awake yet.

The 1100T would be closer to 4.0 - 4.2 and the 2500K will hit 4.4 very comfortably - but i would always recommend an after market cooler.

EDIT: If you were considering the 975 though i would have a look at the 2500K - if money is tight. It may be that it ticks all your boxes for 'multi purpose' useage on a budget.

Thanks for the comments guys!

BTW, 2500k was a typo! It is indeed the 2600k that I had on my shortlist! What is it about this processor that makes it so much better than AMD's offering? I've read about SB granted I was asleep at the time but all I could decipher from it was some flimsy on board graphics that no one will ever use.

4.4 Ghz sounds great :D But I just worried about the intels performance in some 3D apps, it came in comfortably below the AMD, but with the overclock who really knows?

Decisions, decisions :D

Clock for clock, and core for core Sandybridge annihilates Phenom II. There may be some 3d apps though that benefit more from having six full fat cores rather than four hyperthreaded ones. If you have benchmarks to prove that applys to the stuff you use then it's possible AMD is a better move in that particular circumstance.

Blue160 sums it up perfectly - obviously he's the only one whose not sleep deprived and doesn't have a hangover. :)

edit: Christ - i even had to edit that...
