I current have the following:
HDD 1 - 160GB VelociRaptor - Boot + Software
HDD 2 - 1TB Western Digital Black - Storage
HDD 3 - 1TB Western Digital Black - Storage
HDD 4 - 1TB Western Digital Black - Storage
HDD 5 - 1TB Samsung - Storage + BackUps of HDD 1
HDD 6 - 500GB Western Digital - Downloads

I need more space, so I was thinking of (as you may have guessed, I prefer Western Digital):

HDD 1 - Keep VelociRaptor or get a SSD (1)
HDD 2 - 1.5TB Western Digital Green (2)
HDD 3 - 1.5TB Western Digital Green (2)
HDD 4 - 1.5TB Western Digital Green (2)
HDD 5 - 1.5TB Western Digital Green (2)
HDD 6 - 1TB Western Digital Black (3)

(1) I am currently using 130GB of that drive, so I need an SSD to match the capacity. I am open to looking into RAIDing two SSDs, but since I have never toyed with RAID before, I am slightly wary.

(2) Since these drives are going to be simply for storage, I was thinking that I do not need the Black versions. However, I have heard more stories about Green edition drives failing - is this true?

(3) Since the Downloads drive will be accessed more frequently and simultaneously by various programs, I was thinking of keeping one of my existing 1TB Blacks and using that as the Downloads drive.

What do you guys think of this plan? Anything important I should be considering?

You're talking about £360 for a net gain of 2.5Tb, that doesn't strike me as great value for money when you can get a 2Tb Seagate LP for £80.

Are you limited to 6 internal disks?

Have you thought of moving the 500Gb WD to an external enclosure for backups? That would free up a drive bay for another disk and free some space on the Samsung.

I tend to prefer WD, so I would rather go for one of their drives... other drives are probably as good, but I just feel more comfortable with WD.

Yeah, I have no more space or SATA ports for more drives, and I would prefer to avoid having externals.

I also like keeping things on the same drive, rather than splitting, which is the main reason for this plan. For example, I have uncompressed AVIs of videos from our digital video camera on HDD 2, which is nearly full... I want to be able to put more on the same drive rather than put some on another drive.
