hi
i have installed a new samsung sata II 500gb hd in my dads pc. from the start it would cause the pc to almost freeze while trying to use the drive, formatting took about 8 hours, and copying a small file onto it would take hours instead of 1 second.
i tried it in my own pc and reformatted because it said it was not. this took about 50mins to do a full format, (ok i think). and i was able to copy files to it with no problem.

ok so back in my dads pc and still freezing, swaped the new drive with the main drive to eliminate the sata socket but still the same.

so i believe the hd is actually fine but what could cause this slowing down?
the pc has been having a lot of bsods lately and the reason for the new drive is to copy all the data to and then reformat.
any advice would be appreciated.
thanks
ashley

btw the mobo is an asus series k8s-mx-eayz

thanks postman.
i have just run memtest and it said pass complete. no errors.
anything else to try?
thanks
ashley

If your dads PC is old, you might need to put a jumper on the new drive to limit it to sata 150 (Rather than the newer sata 300). However if I remember correctly the samsung drives need to be flashed to get them to run in sata 150 as they dont have any pins to put a jumper on.

Personally, I would take both drives out of your Dads PC and plug them into yours. Then backup one to the other.

Then put the original Drive back in your Dads PC and reinstall Windows from scratch. You will then safely and rapidly know if it is a hardware problem or not.

If he is anything like my parents, he clicks anything the PC tells him he should do and it is full of spyware and viruses! :)

Sorted :)
