I have a Samsung T166 hard drive that looks like it is about to fail on me so I have quickly copied stuff off it.

Question is now what to get?

I have been reading how W/D do not seem to be much good and am worried about getting a new Samsung.

Hitachi, Seagate or Maxtor (didn't Seagate buy them recently?)

WD AAKS or Seagate 7200.11

Maxtor are basically finished as a manufacturer (bought by Seagate) and Hitachi are lagging behind in the 3.5" arena.

How long have you had the t166 for and was it purchased from OCUK? I'm worried as I have one too.
Just because one drive dies doesn't mean that all are going to. I've had multiple drive failures from multiple drive manufaturers. If I went on that basis the only company I would buy drives from now would be samsung only ever had one drive, a Hj401 and its been going strong for about a year or so

As RPS mentionned, the main two drive manufacturers are Seagate and WD atm, however for the quiet lovers the samsung drives have always been top notch, but the fault statistics for all of those three are going to be relatively similar

I purchased it from another company - not OCUK - and got it about 14months ago so probably out of warranty.

My other 2 hard drives are also Samsungs - once of which is 3-4 years old now and going strong (touch wood!)
