So im rebuilding my pc so i can have the ultimate machine to catch up on a year (maybe more) worth of pc gameing (had to leave my pc at home whilst at uni in belfast last year and am taking it back in September).

As my current hard drive (250gig maxitor) makes this interesting set of noises whilst in use :( im going to get some new ones and want to know some details on a few areas.

Firstly, is there any real performance benifits of raid (im looking at raid 1 as i tend to partition drives like mad)?

Secondly, are there any massive benifits of VelociRaptors?

Finally, if all of the above isnt the best idea in the world, are the samsung f1 and WD 640gig cavaliers about the best overall?

(for extra reference theres no real budget)

Thankyou

u will not get any performace increase in raid1, you want raid0 for performace.

Benefits of raid?!?!?! LOADS! performance increases substantially, about 50% in benchmarks, but in real life performance it is arguable as most modern drives are fast enough for windows as it is. but without a doubt raid is faster. In gaming maps definately load faster that is for sure.

i bought a wd 640gb and samsung f1 640gb to compare and return the one i did not like. i went for the samsung as it was a little bit quieter and more steady (less fluctuation, but may just be the sample i had) benchmarks. speed wise they were exactly the same. So it was samsung and i bought another for raid0

Ah thankyou for that, i found all the descriptions of raid a little confusing and was unclear which one's provided a performance bost.

Iv read a lot of praise for both of the drives (both with 2 320gig platters) and i suppose now am just wondering if theres any tangable benifit of VelociRaptors over the samsung or wd cavalier drives??
