New hard drive woes...

I have just plugged in a brand new (from here) WD Black 1TB drive.

However when delving into computer management I get the drive in a funny weird way.

It says it's missing and that after reactivating it - I should run scan disk onto it. Ok then.

I try reactivating it but it still doesn't appear properly in disk management, and of course that means I can't format it.

I have tried replugging all cables & swapping cables. I have looked into the bios and it appears there fine. HD tune also picks it up and is even able to perform a quick scan (which the drive passes!). This is a really odd problem and googling doesn't appear to offer me anything else to do.

Can anybody help please? Thanks very much. :(

Ah now it works for some reason - I removed it and let windows re-detect it. Success.

Weird, I thought I had a borked disk there for a second.

Scary - plugged the very same in last night and haven't done anything to it yet - plan to use Acronis True Image to clone and re-size my old drives, looks nifty...

It was certainly a heart in mouth moment. Drives have never quite acted like that when first plugged in and it was only one of them. Would have annoyed me immensely having to return it straight away.

Acronis came up with the goodsfor me, and cloned my four partitions from my Hitachi 250Gb to the WD perfectly, and allowed me to control the target partition size as well. Seems nippier, and I have soooo much space now! Time to fill it up with Mini DV camcorder captures!
