Hey all, wondering if you could give me some much needed help.

Got myself a new harddrive today, need to install a fresh copy of windows on it and start from scratch.

The harddrive is picked up in the bios, I can select it in boot priority etc. so at least I know its there.

Anyway, I select my dvd drive in the boot priority menu to install windows from CD, get past the RAID driver install and after hitting Enter to start a windows installation, I get told that there is no harddrive installed on the computer, i.e nothing is there or nothing is recognised.

I have tried this WITHOUT the raid drivers, same thing. And obviously WITH the raid drivers aswell, still get the same message.

Only problem I can think of is that the RAID drivers I have on floppy disk are from about 3-4 years ago, I have just had my bios updated on my harddrive, could it be compatibility issues? Should I try and find new raid drivers for my harddrive/motherboard?

For the record, my motherboard is an ASUS K8V-SE Deluxe. Any help at this point is intensely appreciated. Been without my desktop for weeks and when I finally think its sorted,, It isnt.. Please advise!!!

Many thanks,

Evol

A few questions. What OS are you using? Why are you installing a RAID driver for a single hard drive? Is your SATA controller set to RAID?

You might not need to install a RAID driver and need a ATA driver instead for your motherboards onboard controller if its set in SATA/Legacy mode. What SATA controller is it do you know?

I am using windows XP home. Have formatted my old harddrive many many times and always had to install RAID drivers for it, I am not completely knowledgable on computers, i just thought this was necessary for whatever harddrive I used.

The only difference with this harrdrive to my old one is that, I believe this is a SATA II drive, whereas my old one was a SATA I.

The harddrive I have just brought is a hitachi deskstar 320gb harddrive,

on the startup screen is is telling me SATA378 TX2 plus, im not sure if thats the harddrive version, like I said earlier my motherboard is an ASUS K8V-SE deluxe, BIOS version is 1.00.0.33 promise or something.

The floppy disk I have is installing VIA Serial ATA RAID Controller (windows XP), is VIA a bios brand? should I be looking for new SATA drivers from Promise or something?

im sure u use the wrong driver u have to use the one for sata only .did u press f6 and got the floppy in ? iam sure the drive is not formatet.can u do it on another machine?

I think you might be loading the wrong driver as said above. On my old AGP motherboard, I had a Promise SATA controller. I needed to install the promise ATA drivers that I downloaded from the ASUS website for my specific motherboard (ASUS P4C800-E). I didn't use the promise controller for my windows drive though, I used the Intel one for that but you dont have that choice on your board.

I think you might be loading the wrong driver as said above.
Definite possibility.

Evol, that board has 4 SATA ports, 2 controlled by the VIA southbridge and 2 on a Promise controller. Have you checked that you're loading the driver for the controller that the drive is connected to?

ok from what you've all said it looks like I have the wrong drivers..Could anybody possibly point me in the right direction of the promise ones?

By the looks of it I have the VIA ones, but my new BIOS are Promise or something so it looks like I need the other ones. So yeah, can anyone point me in the right direction of the right ones?

Small update, Ive navigated my way through the asus website and found the RAID stuff for my motherboard. The only promise ones I can see are Promise 64 stuff, I dont need these as I dont have a 64bit OS, only 32. Where can I get the proper ones?!

Thanks rob, im on my way to my mates house now to get these on floppy disk. Will let you know how it turns out!

If you've got drivers for the VIA controller why not connect the HDD to one of the VIA ports and use the drivers you have?

i wouldnt know where to begin mate.

Either way ive got myself the promise drivers and am currently installing XP on my new harddrive! thanks all for your help, insanely appreciated.
