Hi guys, got my new hardware, mobo, gfx, hdd, cpu.

My windows is SP! but when i tried to put in the new updates on the xp install to the new HDD it said my key was already in use. Used the MS keychanger program and this says it aswell.

I read somewhere that When you originally get your copy verified that it takes a number from the mobo bios and will only allow this number, if you upgrade and the number doesn't agree MS will knock it back.

What can i do apart from buy another copy of windows. Are there any ways to bypass it so it thinks i am using the original hardware, i still have my old HDD if that is of any use

wow some really helpful info for the guy, instead of being the internet police you guys, ill give the guy the number.

0800 018 8354

call that number its all automated answer the questions in the order of 2212 afaik and they will give you a new conf id and your key will then be registered to your new hardware, ive done this at least 3 times with OEM XP Home.

Do i care if im violating the EULA, do i ***** , oh noes bills going to send the "boys" round ;) :D

call the number dude, its all automated btw, your asked to bash in your installation ID the automated service then asks you a series of lame questions and then gives you a new confirmation id you then type that into the boxes provided and your off.

Ive got an OEM copy of XP Home (from OCers), it was running on a A8N SLI Delux and 3700SD and ive just installed a P5N-E SLI and C2D. I didnt do a fresh instal and activated Windows over the net once i had loaded the new drivers on.
No problems

shouldn't really just swap out a motherboard without formatting (unless they're really really similar) chances are some things just won't 'work' as expected

Normally i would but it was my 1st Intel build and just wanted to make sure all went well (WCing add's another complication) but i had read that somebody else has just swapped components and then deleted/installed the relevent drivers.
I completely deleted all my NV drivers (mobo+GFX) and then installed the new divers and reactivated XP and ive not had any issues.
Maybe XP/software/harware is a lot more forgiving and stable than the days before XP SP1.
