Hey all,

So Ive gone and ordered myself a WD 500GB...
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-120-WD&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=940

I currently have a 300GB Maxtor...
Ive only ever had one hard drive, so would someone please explain what I must do to archive the following...

1. Empty my 300GB and reinstall a fresh copy of windows
2. Install the 500GB and make it the PRIMARY HD (And make the 300GB a HD for any data I wish to dump onto it :p)

I'd like the windows installation to be installed on the 500GB HD.

If anyone has any other inputs into this (I.e. disagree with the way Im thinking of going about thing) please say!

Thanks,
Marky

Sorry... I just reread what I said... and it seems tiredness has got the better of me...

After everything above I want the following setup:

500GB HD (Primary) - Contains all data(I.e. pics/games/apps) PLUS Windows Install
300GB HD (Spare) - Contains any data I want to throw onto it that I dont want on other HD

If you have a different idea - shoot :)

In that case once you receive the 500gb I'd unplug the 300gb while you install Windows in case it decides to get cute and install important files on the wrong hard drive as it has the occasional habit of doing.

Install Windows as you would normally making sure that everything is up to date then just copy across the data you want to keep to the 500gb, this should leave the 300gb free for a quick format under Windows and then you have that drive free for any other data. :)

So...
1. Rip out SATA from 300GB HD
2. Connect 500GB HD and start the PC up and initate Windows setup
3. Finish installing windows and turn off PC
4. Re-connect 300GB HD and boot PC up.
5. Sweet 800GB setup completed :)

Hope thats right... do I need to do anything with the jumpers?

The only jumpers on SATA drives are to enable/disable SATA 300MB/S, normally you just have to take them off to do so but it varies from drive to drive. There is no such thing as master/slave on SATA though because they each have their own channel so if you are unsure about the jumpers and effect then just leave them, they would only affect the max burst speed which has little impact on normal performance.

Your order sounds fine to me. :)

Quick question... because I have the windows setup currently on my 300GB... will it conflict with the windows installation that will be on the 500GB?

Not in the least, you may need to set up the boot order in bios to make sure the 500gb is the primary boot device but other than that the fact that you have an OS on a non-boot drive will make no odds whatsoever.
