Is this possible? My old hard drive became dodgy a couple of days ago, when i installed the new one, which is a seagate 7200.10 250gb and that one works fine, but the old one fails the device self test, read test, SMART test, Start Unit Test and Confidence test.

Is it knackered? And now is it a case of copying the files and a new xp disk?

It's a case of getting all your important file on the new hard drive just in case. You don't need a new copy of XP unless it's a prebuilt machine and it uses a recovery partition. If it does you can copy it onto a cd and use it, search the net for how too.
See if this helps if you need to make a cd. Don't lose your license key.

i might as well just use an xp disk i've got, rather than faffing around the internet. besides this pc doesn't even have a cd drive right now.
