New HD really noisy and rather hot...

I dont think there are any temp monitors on the HD, its just hot to the touch

what's the airflow like over it?

it's not uncommon for drives to run hot if there is little or no airflow going over them (turning the front fan in my case off ends up raising the drive temps 15c+)

Because of where it is i should imagine there will be little or no airflow.

Will try and sort out so there is some airflow over it.

In the meantime, is running hot likley to cause any damage?

Only if you run over the HDD recommended temp.

This is usually somewhere between 55 & 65 deg C.

Higher temp == reduced lifespan is a general rule.

I personally have found maxtors to run too hot and me and a couple of my friends have had them have head crashes, random dying out and sometimes just going pop.

I wont buy maxtor again as i simply cant trust the quality of their products
