HI Guys

Currently got a Maxtor 7v250F0 250gig HD.

Looking at buying a new HD tomos around 500-1tb in size.

From reading It seems the F1's and WDs black are the best choices?

And am i right in thinking that the 640 model is better to go for than 500/750 as its somehow quicker?

On a side note, are these latest HD's and quicker than my current 1?

Thanks a lot in advance

Matt

Yeah, go for the 640Gb. Whether to go for an F1, a WD Black or a WD Blue is pretty much personal preference (there isn't a huge difference between the black and the blue)

In terms of random access times there won't be a huge difference between a new 7200rpm drive and an older one but the sequential transfer rate will be significantly higher. Not double but not far off it.

Thanks for the response

Have ordered the WD.

One question, If i keep my current HD as say a backup drive for files.

Will this take away any performance gain I would have with the new drive? Would having this as a backup drive lower the performance when accessing things that are on the new one?

Thanks

There's no performance hit having a second drive installed.

Are you planning on reinstalling the OS on the new drive? If so disconnect the Maxtor while you do it just to make sure the installer doesn't put the boot files on it.
