Just got a replacement WD Black and it has glue near the sata ports which is still sticky, has scratches on it and rings around the screws! It is obv a refurb do I accept this? When checked with a hdd tool it says its only been powered on 3 times but im sure they can tweak this at WD?

Cloning the drive now to see how noisy it is if its the same as my old one ill send it back as its obv not new.

Does my warranty reset with this drive?

Could be a pull from a new computer. Could be refurbished as new, tested.

Warranty is not reset with a replacement drive, even if new, it goes from the original purchase date.

EDIT

WD may elect which remedy or combination of remedies to provide in its sole discretion. WD shall have a reasonable time after determining that a defective Product exists to repair or replace a defective Product. WD's replacement Product under its limited warranty will be manufactured from new and serviceable used parts. WD's warranty applies to repaired or replaced Products for the balance of the applicable period of the original warranty or ninety days from the date of shipment of a repaired or replaced Product, whichever is longer.

Both WD and Seagate tend to use referbs for warranty replacements.

Chances are the replacement drive has had it's PCB replaced, possibly the actuator unit, they don't use drives with damaged platters.

So it should be ok, just run a few benchmarks and disk check to start with.

Ok cloned the drive tested both. They are both identical in noise and speed. Seems its just the way this drive is :/

Ive opted to keep my original drive and send back the refurb as mine is in much better condition.

WD is a real pain in the ass to rma things with. They are quick to get the gear out it took 2 days. But to send it back its a nightmare.

Seagate send out refurbs for warranty replacement, but they do have a green label identifying them as such. I didn't realise WD labels refurbs the same as new drives.

I have always found WD RMA process fast with no fuss whatsoever. Simply return the faulty drive in the packaging the replacement drive arrived in, attach the prepaid mailer label provided online and drop it off at the local post office. Simples :D
