This is my first post on ocuk forums so go easy :)

basicly i just recieved my new hdd the seagate baracuda 7200.12
and i want to have it as my master hdd with windows vista x64.

so i unpluged my other hdd a old 250gb maxtor, loaded with new hdd and vista x64 disc then booted so it came up with the vista install, went to format and it took like 2secs i can remeber it taking ages (back in xp days) not had a new hdd for a wile so i was woundering if i did it correctly ?

as it is not running a whole lot faster.

many thanks in advance.

That's a quick format. A full format just runs chkdsk as well so best not to bother, if you want to check the drive there are better tools such as the manufacturers own.

but i dident get the question for a full/quick format, so would it be better to try again before i re activate windows vista ? as im still on 30-day trial as i need to phone them to give me a new activation key.

on the windows vista start screen i clicked the new hdd (the only one) then new then format but no question to do full or quick or do u do a full format in windows ?

sorry kind of new to the whole formating installing windows game lol.

oh ok then, suppose ill just leave it the way it ill get on the phone to microsoft tonight to get me a activation key. thankyou for the responses :)

Both Windows 7 and Vista do a quick format and don't even give the user an option for full format when running setup.

The only difference between full format (XP default) and Quick format is that full checks each sector whille formatting.

No point in all honesty. Quick Format is the way forward. You'll be fine :)

thanks a lot for this info, dident even know that vista dident let you do a full, should there be a lot of diffrence between a 7200.12 and a old 250gb samsung ? i dont know the number but it must be going on 3 years old lol.
