New HDD or SSD?..

Hey guys,

Right now I've only got a 500GB HDD that I have Windows 7, software and games on it.

I wouldn't mind getting a new HDD or SSD so that I can boot up Win 7 even faster than it already does, so I was thinking about a 128GB SSD, but that's not a lot of space and I need quite a lot of it for games etc.

I was thinking of buying a 600GB Velociraptor HDD, I've heard they're quite fast, but best of all, they have a much bigger capacity than SSDs and especially when considering the price comparisons.

If if did get the Velociraptor, I'm not sure if I'd actually stick Win 7 on it or leave Windows 7 on my 500GB HDD that I have now.

I'm not sure what's more important to me, fast loading software or fast loading games.

With that said, my PC is a gaming computer as that's what I mainly use it for, but I can see myself using audio software such as Pro Tools for work.

What would you guys do?

Cheers.

Hi,

I would say go for SSD, put your most important games on the SSD, regardless if you got a large games collection or not, most people only play a few games regularly and the rest that you don't play so often put on your second drive, you can always uninstall or swap games off the secondary drive to primary there meant to be a few techniques if you search the forum.

Velociraptor have hear quite mixed opinons on them, from failing to noise, I just think it makes sense to go all the way then go for a 2nd rate drive.

Quoted for truth.

If you want a speed increase then your going to want a SSD. What motherboard do you have and is it SATA II or SATA 3?

128GB is a good size, I managed to install Windows 7, my music collection, Office, Adobe Fireworks and Dreamweaver along with Battlefield 3 and a few other games from Steam and still had space left over.

I think if you bought a Velociraptor you'd be disappointed simply because you'd notice more of an improvement with an SSD.

Buy the 128GB SSD, install your OS and important games on it.

Keep your old HDD, format it, and use it for Documents, Music, Movies, etc; as well as most of your games. You can transfer a game from your Steam library on your HDD temporarily to your SSD if you find yourself playing it a lot. I'll hunt down the "How To" link tonight.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I've got a Sata 2 motherboard... I think. A. Asus M4A78LT-M 760G.
It looks like I'll go for a 128GB SSD then, any suggestions?

Since it's Sata 2, will I not get the benefit out of the SSD?

I'm also thinking of upgrading my PC at the end of the year, so a new MOBO will probably come with that upgrade.

That "How To" link would be great dangermouse425, thanks :).

With it being Sata 2 you won't get the maximum performance from a Sata 3 SSD however it will still be plenty to make you go 'wow'.

There's no point getting a SATA II drive in my opinion. Your better off getting a Sata 3 drive which you can make full use of if and when you come to upgrade in the future.

Ok so I'll wait a couple of months until I overhaul my PC with a big upgrade.

Thanks for the replies guys :).

Just to add my opinion of the Velociraptor I have had 3, all failed in a PC that never gets moved. Aside from that on a scale of speed my normally HDD was 1, the VR was 4, and my SSD is 10. They're not that great.
