Need a new HDD for my OS and apps, as my current drive has given up the ghost. My previous drive was a 500GB Samsung spinner (7200rpm), and I'm now toying between Western Digital's VelociRaptor, or biting the bullet and going solid state, but am open to suggestions. The PC is primarily used for Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and gaming.

What drive and capacity would you guys recommend, and why?

as others have said, get a SSD, no HDD can beat it for speed or performance.

the one bleed has suggested is a good size and not badly priced compared to other ssds the same size.

you will not regret getting a SSD

You'll kick yourself for not having bought one sooner.

If you don't have a backup, then as with all disk drives (HDD or SSD), I'd recommend buying a drive to use as a backup drive too..

I've actually got a 512GB Samsung 850 Pro SSD in my 2008 black MacBook at the moment, which is a bit of a waste, I know.

Would you say the 512GB Crucial MX100 would be the "next one down" in performance? Perhaps I could get the 512GB MX100 for the MacBook (being that it's so cheap, in comparison), and use the Samsung 850 Pro in my PC...

Only review so far. Mixed results in that in basic metrics in synthetic tests the BX (1TB) was below the MX (512GB). Although in more write heavy mixed workloads it came out ahead (maybe due to 1TB if it used more NAND dies). In read heavy workloads (their gaming one) slightly behind.

You would barely if at all notice a difference between the two to be honest in normal usage. The 850 Pro is the faster but the MX is very fast too.

Well, I've bitten the bullet and bought the 512GB Crucial MX100 anyway. :) Will clone my MacBook's Samsung 850 Pro to the MX100 tomorrow, and see how it all goes...
