Hello All,

I have just received my new 4TB Iornwolf drive from OCUK.

Before I start copying over data to it what would be a good idea to use to test the drive to make sure everything is ok?

Its been a vary long time since I bought an HDD (its for a plex server) so wondering where would be a good starting point

+1

Then do a full format if you can stomach the time it takes to complete. After formatting, if the health stats in CrystalDiskInfo look good, start using the drive as normal.
Can you do a full format through CrystalDiskinfo or done via Windows?

yeah, crystaldiskinfo for stats
and then chkdsk /x /r /f from windows powershell (needs admin access) this will run a surface scan and take approx 90mins/tb
then crystaldiskinfo again to make sure that the reallocated sectors, reallocation event and pending sectors remain zero
thanks for the details.

I also like to do a test copy and paste
A large folder of varying file sizes/types
I copy it to and then copy it back

Some of this is probably overkill
Most people probably just shove new drives in
And just use them without doing any of these things
True but as its a Plex server I do not want to start copying stuff over to it and then it die so a copy etc would be good.

I'm with you on a bit of stress-testing before use.
I like to copy a large bunch of files to one folder on a new drive then copy that to another folder on the same drive. That makes the heads rattle!
always good to test before proper use as if using for storage you don't want to waste the time copying it all over for it to then die on you

Right, HDD connected and powered on without any issues.

Current stats are, does this look ok?

Now running the chkdsk /x /r /f command on it, ETA 5h 41 mins
