well i've got a bit of spare money so i thought i'd buy a new head unit for my car looking around the £100 mark, can stretch a bit like but prefer to keep cost low tbh.

want one that will let me plus my ipod in via a rear connection letting me control ipod through the unit. also aux in would be handy. and bluetooth would be nice but not essential
and ofcourse a decent looking one that's not tacky/'chavvy'

what would you all suggest is the best one i could get for and from where (being that it isn't an ocuk competitor)

I just got a new HU upgrade from Sony to Pioneer DEH-5000UB.

It looks nice and has ten colour combos for the display and key illumination so bound to match your dashboard colours at night. None of the keys stick out like a sore thumb and the sound quality is excellent (there's loads of options) and the whole face is flush so suits /most/ dash boards I would have though.

I paid £113 for it which included postage.

It has USB connection on the back (lead) so you can use an mp3 player or USB memory stick, has Aux in and remote control in. The UI is a bit different to navigate but once you get your head around it it's pretty easy to navigate and I do like the mp3 folder list browser so you can cycle disc/folder contents without interrupting the currently playing song.

that's pretty nice, i was actually looking at the Pioneer DEH-6000UB which i assume is 1 up from this? anyway, what is the sound quality like from that and could i ask where you bought it (if not a competitor of ocuk) or email in trust?

I think that might be the one up. Very nice bit of kit.

Well the stock HU on my car was alright but lacked punchy bass and lost some details in highs. The Sony had plenty of detail but not enough options to control the low end detail and also didn't have quite enough bass.

The Pioneer is probably 2-3x better than the Sony and has punchy bass - like having a small sub in the back but...without a sub in the back!

I see your P5000 and P6000UB and raise you...

My P7000UB ;)

Superb head unit, lovely to use and as MRK said the sound quality is excellent, a nice improvement even over my old Pioneer MP3 unit! Browsing the 30GB HDD of music I have under my seat really is a piece of cake

I assume your using a hard drive to get 30GB? I have a 6000ub and am trying to get a hard drive that will power up using only the usb cable and I'm struggling to find one without buying a few and realising they don't work. Any help would be appreciated

Yep using a HDD. I know, it's tricky finding one that works :( I tried a Western 250GB Digital Mybook Pocket or whatever it's called and that didn't work.

I have an old 30GB laptop HDD in a custom cheap 2.5" USB housing that I bought off Ebay.

Slower older hard drive might fit the bill then? I've tried 2 slim external drives one powered up but just clicked, I think because of just not enough power and the other did nothing :(
I might just get a 16gb usb stick and wait till the 32gb drop in price for now, at least I know they work

Yes slower older drives will probably work better. The P7000UB has a file/folder limit anyway (and I expect the lower models do too) so using massive drives is pointless

Howard, had a look at this unit today, looks the DB's! think I've decided on it now over the Alpine - any issues I should watch for, or is it as good a unit as it looks? will be using it for ipod control & the odd cd.

The iPod control is better on the Pioneers than the standard USB control, I have mine hooked up to a 120gb HD which has to be formatted to FAT32 and I had to use the CD-UB100 box in order to get the USB but the iPod control is supposed to be very good.

Ive the 6000UB with a 30gb 2.5" IDE hdd in a cheap ebay USB enclosure. formatted via a random fat tool (swiss army knife or something?) as it wouldnt work via partition magic :s

Anyway, works great, would have preferred if it used the tags to browse rather than folders (i need to read the manual, as that may be possible) but it works perfectly well :)

Have a single din fascia with tray underneath in my focus, and my HDD slots in perfectly, with a hole cut in the bak of the slot for the usb cable :)
