New headphones £150 budget?

They certainly didn't grate on me like some of Sennheiser's stuff does

Sennheisers have a reputation for being smooth, whereas Beyers have a reputation for extremely hot highs, specially the DT770/880/990 and Tesla series, although some of their very old stuff like the DT150/250 are much smoother.

I've found the opposite on the cans I've used from Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic. The Beyers are a much cleaner sound, but the treble isn't harsh like it was on the Sennheisers I've used (HD8 DJ & IE80). Even my Momentum Wireless 2's are quite harsh.

Like they say, everybody's ears are different but yours must rank as borderline unique ;)

Have you listened to the Sennheiser HD650 or HD600? Now those two definitely have smooth highs, specially the 650, so I would be interested to hear your take on those.

I'm 60, so my high frequency hearing is shot and I pretty much hear nothing above about 11 or 12kHz and the DT990s are still painfully piercing to me, which is why they have been relegated to their box in the wardrobe.

I had indeed heard those, and the 598's which were much smoother. Absolutely loved the sounds of the HD 650. The highs on the more consumer headphones are harsher. The Beyers are deffo brighter, but not grating like some of the Sennheisers can be.

The 650 actually started me on a quest to find a closed back version of them. Never did find anything. Only settled on the M2 Wireless because I got them for 200 refurb from the outlet when they had a crazy student offer on them. Had endless problems with the bluetooth and noise cancelling on them though :(

HD598 is close to HD595 which has very smooth treble.
Though one measurement I've seen of new HD599 shows that treble might be little emphasized and that Sennheiser might be aiming for more like loudness curve/"v"-shape frequency response in them.
So maybe some of newer Sennheisers might have stronger treble.
Or then it could be also about need of "burn-in".

After Koss Porta Pros (for portable MP3 player) got Sennheiser HD590 as my first full size cans and at first listening those felt like there's no bass and treble is harsh.
Though after that neither HD595 or DT990 Beyers gave slightest sign of any burn-in effect.
(but Superlux HD-330 again was shock at first try)
