I'm after some advice. I purchased an Hitachi 7K1000.B harddrive yesterday and smart is already showing 65536 raw read errors. Is this anything to be worried about? should I return the drive?

I really don't want to spend hours putting my data on it only to have it fail in a few days time.

The RAW read error has now changed to zero but it now has the following errors:-

Reallocated Sector Count = 1
Reallocated Event Count = 1
ATA Error Count = 2

The Power On Hours is only reading 20, should I be getting these errors on a drive that has only run for 20 hours.

Please help!

Does sound like it's borked already.

I got 4 Hitachi's at the start of the week - no errors.

I think it'll show no errors now as the bad sectors have now been bypassed/skipped and what's remaining is showing up as error-free. The bad sectors will still be there, just not used.

You could try Drive Fitness Test from Hitachi's downloads:

I tried the drive fitness test after I got the RAW read error. The extended test said that the drive was ok. After the test the RAW error was zero and the reallocated sector was 1 etc.

Would overclockers exchange the drive which has 1 sector error and 2 ATA errors? I was going to use the drive in a raid setup (i was going to purchase the second one next week when I get paid) but I'm not sure what to do now as I don't know if I can trust this drive.

I have drives with over 10000 running hours with no errors so to get errors on a new drive after 20 hours is very disappointing.

The only other thing I could suggest is starting an erase disk from the utility and then testing after that. Be prepared for between 4 and 5 hrs to zero the data!

If there's still an error, then I'm sure you'll be able to get it replaced.

I'm currently running 4 in RAID-10.

I think I will e-mail ocuk, if the drive has a bad block after 1 day then as far as I'm concerned it must be faulty.

It certainly sounds that way.

The erase disk and test would pick up if it was just a write error.

I think the ATA error count is the error log - keeping track of the recent faults.

Thanks for the help Le Samourai,

If I erase the disk using the hitachi utility will it reset all of the errors back to zero?

Can anyone from OcUK confirm if I will be able to return the drive for exchange?

I think it'll only sort it if it's a write error. If it's hardware, then it won't help. The errors will still be detected again.

Try in the forums > OcUK Matters > OcUK Customer Service. The posts are private.

Or a webnote from the site's contact us page.

Ok, thanks for the help.

I have started to erase the disk, so fingers crossed!

Well I erased the drive and ran the advanced test. The reallocation errors have reset to zero but the ATA error has stayed at 2.

I am transferring data to it. Hopefully it was a software write failure and the drive is ok. I assume the ATA count would increase if there was a soft or a hard write error.

Yeah, ATA count is the tally of all the errors that have been detected.

Sounds like it's just been a write error.

If you want to stress it further, then the exerciser test adds 30 min tests (looped however many times you need) on top of the advanced test.

How long did the format take?

Hope all continues to go well once you've got the second one for the RAID setup.

it took about 7 hours for the erase and test. I think I will leave it as as single disk for a few weeks before buying another drive. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to help.

oh bugger, i've copied 92gb on to the drive and the raw read error rate is reading 1
