As the title i want to do a bit of everything, like to muck around with sql server on virtual machine installations whilst having a home pc for all the usual gubbins including gaming cod4 gta etc etc

Im split between intel and amd, ive had and used both. Sorely tempted by the i7s but not sure. Ive no plans to overclock.

Ideal budget is £500 though can be stretched slightly for the right deal. I currently have HDDs, Antec Sonata II Case with Antec 550W PSU and a DVDRW which i propose to keep.

So need CPU,Memory,GFX Card and Motherboard + CPU Cooler if it makes a big difference in volume emitted by the stock cooler.

Any suggestions? All appreciated.

Just ignore the case, psu and dvd rw. First 4 things add to £359.89

Just a rough build, and an alternative to AM3. For Gaming i would recommend AMD hands down, but for what you want to do i would seriously consider C2Qs, or wait for i5.

If you're not overly serious about your gaming you could squeeze an i7 setup out of £500:

-i7 920 ~£200
-X58 mobo ~£130-140
-6GB DDR3 ~£80
-Radeon 4850 1GB ~£80

Obviously if gaming is of high priority then you would probably be better off getting a C2Q / AMD setup paired with a Radeon 4890 or better.
Heck as you can stretch your budget why not go for the i7 paired with 4890 at around £550 :)

That said, as you have no plans to overclock that i7 isn't looking quite such a great deal compared to a X4 955 @ 3.2ghz stock. Not sure how it would perform for databases but my gut feeling is that clock-for-clock it would be slower than intel.

One further note I would add is that I would be looking to get more than 4GB RAM if possible considering you want to be running SQL Server under VMs.
