Hi im thinking of doing the same, did you see much improvement?

Never really tested it with the stock CPU as it was a no-brainer to upgrade so cheaply for doubling the thread count and a significant clock speed boost.

Ticking along nicely with Plex, OpenHAB, NAS, Pihole and other VMs that I am just playing with.

Okay so to update this Thread, I got a really good deal on a Gen 8 with i3 installed. My next dilemma is installing Windows on a SSD drive so that I can use my 4 drive bays for 3.5" drive.

you can install an SSD in the top but think its limited to SATA2 speeds if you are using the OSD port. You also need to boot off a USB first if you don't intend to use the front cages.
