New house - vital tech

Just had networking built into my new house and it's great. Recommend getting as many ports in as you can afford. I only wish I'd run some extra ports to the Living room.

Have it all feed back to a central location, I picked a utility cupboard space. I also had the Master Socket installed there too for my ADSL so that is where my Router/Switch live.

Exactly what I'm planning on doing in our new place :)

Unfortunately the builder for mine would only do CAT5E, however I still get 1Gbit speeds and can't see anything needing more bandwidth than that for a looong time :-)

Network points and lots of plug sockets, nothing worse than having to have extensions all over the place.

This is some of the tech I'll be installing in the next couple of months:
CAT6 sockets in most rooms.
Visonic alarm system with ceiling PIR motion sensors and text alerts.
Waterproof speakers in bathroom Ceiling (possibly kitchen too).
Intercom System with a receiver in the kitchen and upstairs landing area.
Small outdoor antenna access point for the garden area.
Small CCTV system pointing on car, front steps and garden.

I will be posting updates on my project thread: Link

Make sure you install LEDs instead of halogen down lighters when it comes to that stage. The initial outlay isn't that great in the overall scheme of things, but the monthly saving on electric is dramatic over a 20-25 year mortgage period.

With changes to a few pieces of equipment and lights around this house my savings are in the region of £12 a month, perhaps more, hard to tell until we've done another few months and the use of washing machine, dish washer and tumble drier stabilises.
