looking for a new laptop to replace my 17" dv9000 and I specifically want a metal/alloy and not plastic laptop

I know the Envy is all metal but what about the new DV7 series, I can't work out if the "brushed aluminium" statement means mock metal or if it is actually metal like the Envy ? Looking at the DV7-6154 for example

I will only consider HP since i have had exceptional out of warranty support from them in the past and i trust the brand

hi

no not seen either yet, might pop into john lewis. Do you have the old 1xxx or the newer 2xxx Envy?

Currys have the older 1050 available for £699 which is a bargain, might go for this since i wont be using it for any gaming (too old for that malarkey!)

I've got the old 1050 model. It's fine for gaming with the 5850.Gets a bit hot though! £699 is a very good deal if you can fine one

the only problem with these is that they don't seem to be using very well specced graphics chips for what are supposed to be gaming / multimedia systems.

and rageeeeee >< the cheaper models (still £500+) of the new HP DV series seem to be using the fusion chipset a lot which is about as powerful as my calculator when compared to an i3.

The performance of the processor part should be comparable to a previous AMD Athlon II P340 (2.2 GHz Dual-Core). Due to TurboCore the single threaded performance should be slightly better and the multithreaded slightly slower. Therefore, the performance is clearly worse than similar clocked Sandy Bridge based processors (e.g. Core i3-2310M).

The DV7 i have has the ATI 5650

Seems to do what i need it to do, but im not a heavy gamer.

yer but once you start spending the money £800+ to get to this level of graphics in the HP's there are imo more attractive alterntives

up to this price they use the 6490 which isn't a quick card at all considering what you can pick the dell XPS 17" GT550/555 equipped systems for new, let alone on the outlet.

the 5650 is ok but again not for the money, these can be found on the £350 inspiron systems.

infact the dv7-6154ea @ £999 only has a 6490 in which is a joke.

I hear what you are saying. But with the Envy series you are not paying for just a good graphics card,it's the whole package. You cannot compare an Envy to a Dell inspiron.
They where HP's attempt to take on the macbook pros.

The Envy is literally the elite of HPs home consumer laptops. They literally wipe the competition in terms of specs and VFM, spec wise, including Macs. You can't compare an Envy to an Inspiron, they are leagues apart in terms of build quality and overall package.
