New idea for getting a driving licence

blame the area, newport is full of ****heads tbh :P

I can vouch for that. I bought my current alloys from a bloke in Newport, when i went to pick them up some kids were in the park next to his house throwing fireworks. Coming under fire certainly makes you load your car quicker :p

lol at the fog light comments and agree:P
when i was 17 i was a verry silly driver i have now been driving 2 years (last week wuw) and i do go over the speed limit when tis safe but never in residential areas. its nothign to do with the driving test its nothing to do with how old you are. its just a phase i beleive people have to go through, i am glad i got through my stage without any real trouble and i dident have any major crashes untill i slowed down (work that one out) they will spend money on bad looking cars if they want to, is there a forum for slating people that have bought fiat multiplas cos there worse than the worst saxo/corsa/so on i have seen!

All that a test shows is that you can drive to a certain standard and understand road rules, if you are asking people who have been driving for around 4 months with an instructor to suddenly leap out and start driving like someone who has for 20 years you are mistaken its not possible, you as a driver on the road have to give room for error that there are nervous people on the road, driving up their arse with your foglights on and your BMW badge on your bonnet isn't going to help ;) .

Fact is after 1 year everyone would fail their DSA test through rules like mirrors and procedures or observations but be a much better driver because of the milage, a test of the same sort is therefore pointless. Not to mention taking away a license from someone who has a job would be crippling.

As to the proportion of young drivers being penis heads, well I would say its no higher than the rest of the age groups, you get morons in all of the age ranges regardless of it being a Punto or a Porsche. Already it is heavily biased against young drivers - 6 points and you have your license taken away, that could be two slight cockups at speed cameras.

I passed on Wednesday and have basically just about come to terms with the power my mondeo has and have decided that if I drive the way I have since wednesday, I am going to end up dead. So from now on I am trying my hardest to stay alive. :p

Personally I see no difference between some kid that spends all his cash on Lexus lights and some middle aged bloke that spends all his cash on a Range Rover, in my opinion it's money that could be spent much better either way. :)

yeh... on a bike

The fact I dive a BMW has nothing at all to do with it. I can drive and have never used my foglights when un-necessary and certainly dont drive up peoples behinds.

Im not saying its possible to drive like an experienced driver after passing your test. I have never said that. However, what I am saying is that after a year, you should still be able to pass your test no?

I dont understand how you think that someone who can't use mirrors and signals properly is a better driver? Mileage is irrelevant. If you are a bad driver, you will stay a bad driver regardless of how many miles you do.

Also I dont get your point about having a job that requires a licence. Does the fact you have a driving job mean you won't have accidents through negligence?

The point my first post was trying to make is that there should be retests to make sure new drivers haven't picked up any bad habbits and can still actually drive. I think I should also point out that I think this also applies to the elderly too.

Whilst I agree with you i think that the curret driving test is a joke, in that you will fail for doing things that most drivers do everyday (ie crossing hands when turning a corner, or apparantly using engine braking which is ridiculous). If this was changed so normal and safe drivers could pass without having to read up on the idiotic criteria you sometimes have to meet, i would agree with you :)

Tom.

they should just make the test a lot harder, a lot more 'involved' and require more technical knowledge and reduce the number of minors to 5.

too many idiots on the road

I never said driving a BMW has anything to do with being a bad driver, much in the same way that you said anyone who wears a baseball cap and has a neon light on their car makes them a bad driver. ;)

Passing a test after a year would be hard, driving for a test is very specific and methodic it is still very possible to be as safe as houses and not pass a driving test due to silly things like crossing hands, or non-economical driving (i.e lowgears downhill to stop brake fade got me 2 minors), that is what I meant by mirrors and signals, evidently not to a dangerous point but very few people use mirrors like they did on their test and are still safe.

By milage I mean road experience, Driver X and Driver Y both got the same score on their driving test on the same day, who will be the better driver after one year X who has done 500 miles or Y who has done 50,000 miles and got into more situations and dealt how to get out of them? If you are a bad driver, the milage will probably make you worse, but if you are a good or nervous driver then it will make you better no?

As to the employment the law is often a lot more forgiving if your living requires you to drive or commute, how annoyed would you be if you lost your job if you crossed your hands three times or didn't check your right hand mirror whilst going around a country bend?

Retests are a good idea but they should test for different things than the first test, which I think is probably already too slack in important areas and finicky in others. :)
