Yep, afraid it is 'normal'.
We had this at work with some new iMacs. Did dome research and there is an Apple support document about this. It also appears that some IPS panels in general are getting these symptoms.
We still tried sending one back to Apple, but was rejected with reference to the aforementioned support document.
One way we found round it was to reduce the brightness and contrast slightly.
Wow. It only seems to be if i leave something white on the screen. Think I shall use my external for long editing sessions then as it will just burn an image into it. As far as I'm concerned that is not normal and have never had this issue on any IPS display i've ever used.
My LG 27EA83 doesn't have any of the issues this does and that is also an IPS display...
Similar usage at work. The users have Adobe InDesign open for several hours at a time. Most noticeable when they then change to a dark grey background.
Changing the brightness from auto to a lower level has significantly reduced the issue though.
Also setting a screensaver for a few minutes after a session does help quite a bit too.
Note that the retention isn't permanent so isn't damaging the screen.
Funnily enough now I am more aware that it happens I have also noticed it on my own LG IPS231 display at home.
Out of interest, does iMac use an LG panel? The same issue happens with the retina MBPs as well: the ones with Samsung panels are more resistant to it.
In my eyes that's clearly a defect and it seems Apple's way of dealing with it at no cost is to simply writea document about it and use that as "proof" that it's normal. Unacceptable.
