I'm currently looking to spend under £400 on a new build consisting of;

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, Motherboard, Ram and Psu

I want to be able to overclock to 3.0Ghz+, though I'm not sure whether to get 1066Mhz or 800Mhz ram.

I can get the following for £380 including vat and P+P;

Coolermaster Real Power 700W - (I want this to last several years, for future upgrades etc)
Crucial 2GB Kit (2x1GB) Ballistix Memory DDR2 PC2-8500
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0
Asus Motherboard P5KC

Any advice/suggestions for other components greatly appreciated

go for the 1066 if you can, ive got the geil ull 800 stuff, cracking ram btw, but i think its limiting me, im aiming for 4 gig from the q6600

change the psu to the likes of corsair, stay clear from hiper, ive a 780w ocz modxstream and its a great psu, only reason i got an ocz psu is because i bought one before and had no hickups what so ever

ah, i see you have an hx 520 anyway. hold on to it for a while and get a new HSF for the quad, you will need aftermarket one if you intend to overclock, i can reccomend the tuniq tower, others will do so too. others will say to go for the thermalright ultra

that board is based on the the maximus so you will be def hitting the 3 gig mark even with the geil ram, mine has done 900mhz

Cheers, my main concern is the mobo; i don't want to spend £90 on the p5ke, so is the p5kc better than a standard p5k?

I have just always had an asus mobo thats all; never really considered anything else:p

I think you should go ahead with the Geil 800..you can easily go to 3.6 with the Geil 800..you will only be able to reach 4gig with exotic cooling methods - The Geil won't break a sweat at the lowly 3 gig ... you have the memory divider as you go faster and a lot of room to play with.

I have a ABit IX38 Quad GT, with 800MHz OCUK Value RAM and it will happily sit at 3.4GHz. Anything over this and the divider won't allow the correct speed (MY 4GB of OCUK Value will not go over 862MHz!)

If you go for OcUk value RAM you can get 2x 1GB 1066MHz stuff for £41.11 inc. VAT. That would be a better bet than low latency 800MHz I'd have thought!

Only think I regret on speccing my PC was not going for 1066 RAM! Thems the rubs!
