New iPod Touch 2G

Get yourself set up on Skitch and you'll never need anything else for basic screenshots etc
I will try this out shortly, The sharing online part is not a big issue for me as I have some webspace. Just want a simple thick application (not web based) that can do for me what MSPaint did on windows. i.e. take screenshot, cut out bits of data with a square/circle/eraser tool etc. I can't find anything built in Leopard that does this (to me) simple task.
*drools*

wants one

how easy is it to convert an xvid to play on it?

Using VisualHub on Mac OS X, surprisingly easy. It is annoying that the vast majority of decently rated conversion apps for xvid/divx/h264 to iPod format tend to be for Windows users. I just converted a few Music videos I had takes about 1 minute each for 4 min videos so I would say maybe 4x Real Time encoding? (Obviously will vary depending on many things).

(p.s. check my sig if you are "into" Heroes :) )

OK, bad start.

Itunes says there is an update 2.1.1 (unit had 2.1 on it). I downloaded it, it extracted, then I got an error in iTunes (cannot update error 63?). iPod no longer seen by iTunes. Replugged in and now iTunes says it has detected it in recovery mode!! Doing a Restore & Update now :(

Interesting I had the same thing when I got my iPod Touch 2G.

Was worried that I had turned it into a brick! :( but since then its been amazing best mp3 player I have ever had.

Exactly what Skitch does, plus it has the benefit of uploading the image with one click. It really is a must have app for OS X.

I was looking at getting one of these.

Just one question on using the Wi-fi. How much of London is currently covered by wi-fi and how does connection work, ie do I have to pay a set subscription fee to someone, is it dependent on where you use it et.....? I'd like to have the use of the feature as it seems like a good function to have for the internet usage (I don't want an iPhone), but realistically how useful is it in terms of where I'd actually be able to get a signal and how costly is it?

BT Openzone wi-fi is available in a lot of place around the West End now. The entire Oxford Street is covered, and in all sorts of other places I turn mine on and it finds BT Openzone all the time.

If you have a subscription to BT Openzone (£5 per month for 500 minutes, £17 per month for 2000 minutes) then you can use any of the BT Openzone hotspots all around London (and other places).

I have two things to say.

:D +

Cheers for that. What about in the City as that is where I am working?

Is Openzone contracted or can you start and stop it when you want to?

My 8Gb touch of 3 weeks old is for sale - In my opinion they are nothing more than a digital handbag. The screen and apps are good but the sound quality is absolutely appalling. Also, you have no way of controlling the volume or pausing when its in your pocket due to all the controls being on the touch screen.

My old 20Gb Zen sleek (now deceased) wiped the floor with it on sound quality and ease of use.

Getting a Creative Zen X-fi :)

That's why the v2 has external volume controls ;)

If your 8gb is 3weeks old, then you should have taken it back (under the 2 week returns) and swapped it for a new v2 ;)

Do much research before buying? :p

Plenty thanks :)

The sound quality is the bigger issue - its simply crap - not what anyone should expect from Apple's flagship ipod. My mate's 5 year old "Brick" of an ipod sounds better.

Having heard an 8gb Zen X-fi yesterday, there is no comparison with regard to sound quality....the Creative simply batters the ipod 100 times over and comes with headphones that don't look like they've just fallen out of a Kinder egg :D

The fact is, ipods are primarily MP3 players....its their day job to play music and it can't even do that well :D

Agree about the sound but hell I eventually got used to it given my 1G Touch is the first ipod I've ever owned after my iRivers and Creative's. I use Super.Fi 5 Pro's on mine and they show the poor audio nice and clearly. The overall audio is just so compressed along with the vocals. I thought about the Zen XFI because I went nuts about it when it was first mentioned, let us know what you think of it when you get it :)

Then again I saw the audio issue coming from a mile away when Apple introduced the touch. Its hard to squeeze decent quality out of something so slim. I stuck with it because it excels in almost every other area aside from audio.

I don't know, I think 'sound quality' is something that is either limited to a small portion of the market or can be something that exists entirely in the head. Maybe it's a bit of both.

The vast majority either don't know better or are happy enough as the size of the marketshare and increasing level of sales (despite its long popularity) would show.

The Creative X-Fi looks like a very nice player by the way. I would have considered it but I don't really like Creative as a company, especially with their handling of the soundcard and Vista thing not so long ago.

Guys I'm off to the US next week, how much should I save getting a 32gb jobby over there? Any problems getting one in the US, apart from the different plug?
