I'm getting seriously annoyed with the internet speed at home. I'm with pipex at the moment (was originally toucan but they got bought out). I'm paying i think £17/month for unlimited up to 8Mb broadband.

It is currently 12 in the afternoon and this is my current speed:



It is currently taking a minute to load this forum the ping is that bad. The connection speed has been variable at the best of times but never this bad in the middle of the day before! Normally around 5.5-6 at this time and 1-1.5 in the evening. Is this likely to be the ISP shaping traffic or something else?
 
That is utterly ridiculous speed, have you tried complaining about it first? see if they can get their act together? think they might be having technical difficulties if that has only happened today.

I am very happy with mine at the moment.

What are your router stats? you could have a poor connection as well as a crap ISP
Nottingham does not at present have be/02
Easynet= Sky/easynet/ukonline are reliable

@OP - Post your router stats.

Do you get this speed all the time or a certain times of the day?
 
Its been all weekend and still now. My router is a Airport Extreme Etherneted to a Netgear DG834G. I'm connecting to the Extreme wirelessly from a Windows 7 desktop via a Netgear WN111v2.

The netgear currently says:
Modem
ADSL Firmware Version 7.03.01.66
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 15046 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 963 kbps

The connection to the router I've noticed is really slow, so on second thought I think it is could be a LAN network issue? I'm just doing another speed test on the desktop and iphone to see if they get similar results. It is taking 3 minutes just to prep the download on the desktop!

Desktop:

ping- 199ms
dl-0.41
up-0.70

Both same server.
 
when did you notice this drop?
any works in your area?
do you download a lot? are they managing traffic and have they slowed you down?
have you rang them to complain?
 
Just tested both again at exactly the same time:

clearly different so I'm assuming that indicates a LAN issue?

You're connected at 15Mbps...

Remove the Airport Extreme and connect up the Netgear as a modem/router, can I ask why you're using the Airport Extreme?
 
Boo-Hoo, I'd kill for a line like that atm.


My entire land line is down since Sunday evening, and BT can't even be bothered to send an engineer out to the exchange to fix it (they've already said it's an exchange issue, not our fault) and they can't be arsed to get it sorted before Friday. Best I can do until then is a wireless tether to my Android phone over GPRS (I get good signal strength, but O2 haven't bothered to update the Mast to support 3G)
As painful as browsing like this is, It is still better than nothing. Living in the countryside sucks.

On an actual on-topic note, I'm looking to move to Xilo shortly. I'm currently with UKOnline, who are brilliant for mass downloading, but terrible for gaming, they use some kind of shaping that causes me packet loss inside their network. Xilo ought to be good, but they are going to be expensive ... I'm looking at the Office 80GB package, which'll be around £38 for a ~4Mb down, 856Kb up. The home packages are much cheaper, but only have 448 upload and have different definitions of peak times, so I'd use the usage allowance up faster.

I'd like to go with AAISP, but their price structure is no good if you are at home during the day.

The desktop no longer will connect to the Internet. It is saying DNS server not responding. I've tried connecting to the netgear via etherenet directly but it won't work, same if I try via the extreme. i also have a netgear dgn2000 which I've just swapped in for the other netgear but getting same error when Ethernet connected to desktop. The light on the rougher is showing the Ethernet as connected.
 
Ok this is starting the @#!* me off, just disabled the AVG firewall and now I magically can connect via wireless/ethernet to the DGN2000 router and get this result:


I'm going to try the old router again. I @#!*ing hate AVG, been causing me grief all week!
 
Try opening cmd and running

and then

If it works when you use 8.8.8.8, It confirms your ISP DNS server is dodgy, in which case you need to manually set your DNS servers to the Google public ones at: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
You can either set it in your router, which will fix things for all devices on your network, or change it in network settings
 
Ok I've plugged the Extreme back in and all is working properly again. Thanks for the help guys. I've disabled AVG firewall. I did a speed test comparison between wireless though the netgear DGN2000 and the Extreme and the DGN got 2 Mbps faster connection dl. Does that seem right? I bought the extreme because the netgear's connection seemed really unstable at times and I'd bought an airport express and iphone so thought it'd all work smoother.
