been putting together a build for a fairly high end Prodigy case based build for a mate and wondered what peoples opinions are of this spec?..

budget for the gfx card isnt pinned down yet, but its looking to be around the 7950/70 or 770/780 level, may go to the MM for the GFX

also looking at watercooling, possibly the Antec 1220 / Corsair H100i sort of area for some decent cooling

i build up another system a few months ago based around the i5 and a 7950 and found in BF3 it was running all 4 cores at 85%+ in the game, so i was loooking for a bit of headroom for next gen games

Wanted to use THIS Prodigy but can't put it in the basket yet.

Managed to get you the i7K with a H100i bundled with it and still came in at a lower total cost :)
 
yeah i saw the h100i / 4770k combo, shame its only an oem cpu...

i specced the Maximus board, but it is a big jump over the Z87I Pro... would there be much noticable difference?

and tbh i aint happy with a 550watt psu running a 7970 + 4770K overclocked

also the ram speeds are a fair bit lower than that of the dominator.. tho that is matched in the lower price

It's nicely styled bud I'll give you that. Although you won't see it, even with a side window all you really see is the GPU lol

The RAM speeds are the same it's the CAS that is different but that makes little odds in the real world. I don't see what's wrong with the Asus Pro mobo, it'll still allow voltage adjustment to push the overclocks and the 550W Seasonic Gold PSU is very good (review HERE). Also I don't think the Prodigy will like the 280mm Rad, best double check that.

I sense you can't be dissuaded from that mobo so.......

Food for thought. RAM is definitely faster and the 770 GPU is basically a "Super Duper" 680. The GB windforce one is an option too they both have a 3 year warranty so an extra year over the VTXD 7970
 
240mm rad is no problem seen here

I have been asked to build to the best possible (within the max of £1500 budget.. which i am already well under)

so i think i will stick with the dominator ram and i just cant come down below 650watts on the PSU lol... i was looking at 750watts.. it'll mean a cooler running psu and quieter for longer hopefully

i am swaying over to the H100i tho over the Antec 1220... there is very little in it other than the fancy software on the corsair as the prices are the same
 
 
I said I don't think the Prodigy will like a 280mm rad. The H100/1220 are 240mm I know they fit I just said check in case you could fit a larger rad.

If I recall the TX series did have complaints about coil whine, ideally I'd use a modular PSU but that's down to you. You seem pretty set with what you want so best of luck with the build :)
 
hah sorry didnt see you said 280mm rad!..

I am still concerned about the wattage of the psu no matter how good it is running this setup..

i am also looking at the possibilty of going up to M-Atx instead.. the mainboard is cheaper and gives the option of dual graphics cards later on..

downside is finding a case as nice and compact as the Prodigy. I know there is a m-atx prodigy coming, but its going to make it a very tight squeeze..

If you really are serious about adding another card in the future then m-atx isn't really that great it's two small the second card would virtually be right on the first one and have you seen m-atx prodigy two graphics cards and a rad nah.

Regarding the prodigy build the motherboard you keep going back to is a waste of money your just paying for the sake of it when performance wise £160 board will be the same minus a few fancy features and if your going to spend more on the ram might as well just add another £40 odd quid and go for 16gb.

The prodigy isn't that small of a case it's fairly fat compared to other cases which add to height area rather then width.

Do you already have items like ssd then?
 
Decent quality 550W PSU will power the 4770K and GTX 780 without a problem. Hell, I'm running a Titan on 450W with no issues whatsoever.

Kit these days is very power efficient so we're way past the times where you needed monster 1000W PSUs just to run things (I'm looking at you GTX 480 SLI)
