Let me preempt the shoplifting jokes and also ask that if the mods deem this topic unsuitable then please close the thread. I am in no way endorsing the actions discussed in this thread, this is purely a matter of convenience.

I bought a winter jacket on Saturday and when I got home there was still a security tag on the inside of the pocket. It's one of those round plastic type with a the metal stopper and pin going through the material. Pictures of tag and reciept for jacket can be posted if required lol

So is there an easy way to get the tag off or is the best way to go back to the shop? (which I really don't want to have to do)

I was just going to take a chisel to the top of it but are there any other suggestions as to the safest way to remove it myself?

(I do not have access to liquid nitrogen, before someone suggests it)

Phone them up, explain the situation.
They will be expecting you when you come in, and any potiental problems will be defused.
You will want to remove the tag properly so it does not damage the garment.

Magnets...I think the device they use to take them off in the shop is a magnet (or two), If its the type I'm thinking of the pin is held in by a little latch which is opened by the magnets. I'm probably wrong though as I have never actually tried this and have no idea where I got the idea from.

you should be able to remove it easily with a magnet.

Place a magnet against the bump, and it'll release the catch.

take it back to shop.... unless you did walk out with it on in which case liquid nitro... ah :p

Dont you just need a strong magnet ? thats what the shops use i think

I know I can take it back to the shop, but it's a bit of a pain as it's miles away and will have to wait till next weekend.

Can I not construct some kind of electromagnet in my kitchen tonight to remove it?

If the tag is inside the pocket whats the problem? No one will see it just hack it out and have your mum stitch it up if need be.

Phone them up and explain your annoyance and the inconvenience it will cause you to have to return to the store, and re-emphasise that they should have spotted it in the first place. Then maybe they will pay for your trouble in having to return to the store (say you were just passing through etc.).

At least then the pain of having to go back is offset by the fact that you might be able to blag some compensation.

Have you seen the size of those tags.

Cannot you use wire cutters to cut through the metal bit if you don't have a magnet?

Not without doing damage - that's part of the point of them.

A magnet is the only proper way of doing it unless you fancy taking it back. The only other solution is if you know anyone who works in a different shop that has these - they're not particular to one merchant so any shop that has these tags should be able to take them off.

Leave it in and walk in and out of shops all day, setting off the alarms for the amusment.

When I worked for a competitor the people I worked with stuck about twenty security tags to a game I bought and the bag they put it in. I then promptly made my way up to Oxford Street for some shopping - only to set the alarm off in every store. By about the fifth shop the security guard stopped me and made me explain myself - he even checked on his computer that no shop was reporting anything stolen. :(
