Evening everybody!

Last Friday i got a phone call from a charity i recently applied to work for as an IT Desktop Support Engineer saying that the person they originally asked has failed his checks, be that medical or CRB.

The lady asked if i was still interested and indeed i am, so she sent me the forms to fill out etc.

Now the problem i have is, do i send these forms and then hand in my notice and hope that my checks all go through like the last bloke, or should i wait and make sure i've passed them first?

The reason for my asking is that the lady on the phone said she wanted the person to start asap, and my notice period is 1 month. So, i'm not really sure what to do.

Suggestions?

Tell her you have to give one months notice and see what she says, you would be daft to leave your current job without having the new one in place.

Tell her very politely and positively that you really want the job, but need to wait until you definitely have a new job before handing in notice. Unfortunately this means you will not be available until 1 month after the checks are complete. You're really sorry about this, hope the offer is still open and are sure she will understand your position.

How long do the checks take to come back? When I started my job, I had to take a drugs test. I then got instantly offered a job with the condition that if the test came back positive, it would mean instant dismissal. It wasn't an issue because I knew it would be negative but I/they didn't get the results untill about a month into my employment. In that situation, there isn't really a get out. From memory (it was over 7 years ago) I just got a letter saying drug 1 reading=0, drug 2 reading=0 etc etc BUT it could have meant no job.

Yea, I think that's the best approach.

Hopefully she'll understand and be fine it!

Will keep you guys updated ;)

When i was on the PTFA at school i had to be CRB checked and it took a good 6 weeks to come back. And the CRB came direct to me, not the school :)
