Just got a new temp job in a warehouse. The shift im on is something ive never done before its 4 days on 4 days off. Two shifts are days and the other two are nights. Then after you do that for so many weeks you get 18 days off. Anyone done anything like that, also ive never done nights.

that sounds horrible, it not consistent.

I dont think it sounds bad, its just an odd shift pattern. Its 12 hour shifts, which ive never done before, ive only done 8hr shifts. Im not bothered about that at all. Its just the night shift, im not sure if its easy going to sleep during the day. But i do like the sound of 18 days off :)

I do 4 on 4 off but the same shift 6am - 5.30pm and it's fantastic, less travelling, more free time. But I would not fancy the switch to night shift after two days of early shifts. That's going to mess your body clock up no end.

Just thought of another perk, its enough distance to ride my motorbike:D
So the pros and cons as i see it:

Pros:
Motorbike to get to work.
pound more an hour than my last job.

Cons:
12 hour shifts (not really bothered about it, but i just wouldnt class as a perk)
night shift

I used to do 8-8 shifts, including overnight. It was ok, until it got to about 5am then it was horrible. Last 3 hours really dragged on, felt like working the 9 hours all over again; twice.

I'd do that, you know exactly when your time off etc will be so it's easy to plan. It's more money AND that shift pattern will make the week go quickly.....oh and 4 days off :)

I did this at dairy crest it ***** with your head mate.

i did 2 days 2 nights 4 off then every 80 ish days got 17 days holiday.

for £23,000 a year at the age of 19 it wasn't bad but it takes a toll on you.

especially when you work friday night saturday night then the next week you do saturday sunday and work friday day so for 4 weeks you don't get a weekend basically :/ but then you dodge it for a couple.

standard shift i believe even call centers are begining to adopt it these days. it's tough but the shift pay and holiday is nice.

and ofc having 4 day weekends is always a bonus. allthough your first day you have to stay up allday to get your sleep pattern round to day time again to 1. enjoy your time off and 2 be ready for the 2 day shifts again.

used to go

wed thur day fri sat night
thur fri day sat sun night
fri sat day sun mon night
sat sun day mon tue night

but that also worked the other way, was just depressing knowing for nearly 4 weeks you wouldn't be up for going out with your mates at the weekends cus your so tired or actually at work.

I did a temporary shift of 6am-2pm and I hated it.

It meant I had to get to bed by 8pm :( get up in the freezing cold and while it was still dark and while most of my friends and family were doing something in the evening I said I couldn't go.

I used to do 4 on 4 off, alternating 6-6 shifts. So a week of nights, then days etc with no massive break.

Loved it, 12 hours were the issue for the first month then I just looked forward to the 4 off :D

Wouldn't want to do 2 days, 2 nights 4 off though.

I used to do 5am - 2pm for from 6 days to 14 days in a row and loved it :D

Afternoons to yourself, nap in the sun, bed around 11-midnight and a few hours kip :D

It truly baffles me how companies continue to screw with shift patterns when they can be made mind bogglingly simple!

A friend of mine is a Nurse at Great Ormond St and was doing 2 days, 1 off, 2 nights, 2 off 3 days, 2 off, 2 nights etc etc. Just crazy. Keep all teh days and nights together so that you can get them all done in one block. That way you don't have to flip your body clock 24hrs every few days.

My pattern is 4 on, 5 off, 5 on, 4 off, 5on, 5off. Thats all days. Then i do exactly the same but nights.

What it means is that i get a whole month between having to do a full 24 hour body clock change, I get 4 or 5 days off after every run of shifts which is MUCH better than only doing 2 or 3 in a row and getting 2 or 3 off as it actually feels like a break and ultimately, its easier to do 5 nights on the bounce than 2on, 2off, 2on simply because once you are into a night routine staying in it is easier than getting out and back in again.

My industry revolves around people doing shifts and i've tried most of them. Nothing come close to this one.

night shift

Trust me you'll see the bonus' after a while. So many days off, less commuting per hr on average than 8hr days, and when you do eventually do 8 hr days is a walk in the ****ing park. You rock up, have a spot of brekkie, then its apparently lunch and all of a sudden its time to go home.

If I lived closer to work and there was a possibility that i could do 14 hr days I would. Get it all done and out of the way to have more days off.

Similar to what our Staffordshire Control and Road staff do, They get something stupid like 18 days off in one go every so often as well.

My shift patern:

4 Nights
3 off
3 Days
1 off
3 Nights
3 off
4 Days
7 off

In effect only working about 14 days in any given 30 day period :D

That can't be healthy having to work 2 nights, followed directly by 2 days without a break?? That'll **** your body clock up big style.

Wonder why it isnt' 4 nights, 4 off, 4 days, 4 off, 4 nights etc, gives your body time to adjust

I do the same thing. You will need a clock which tells you what day it is. Trust me on this one! I have no concept of days or months now! Personally, I love them. Only doing 2 12 hour days, then you get a half day off. The you start 1 nightshift, and you only have one left! No time for your body to get into a nightshift sleeping routine means its easier to go back onto days.
I do it for them money, and for the time off. Means I get paid more for working less days.
