ive got a sony vaio about 2 and a half years old, would like to upgrade to a faster hdd, currently have 80gb 5400rpm
the hdd has lots of pins on it so im guessing thats ata 100 !!!
so what im realling asking is: what is the biggest and fastest hdd i could get?

thanks ali

Ideally a 7200rpm one is what you're after but they're surprisingly thin on the ground if you need an IDE interface, especially big ones.

ah i did see the WD scorpio, mate said he recently bought seagate momentus which was 7200 spin. but i cant seem to find them now his is ata 100
I looked at mine it says travel star on it so would going to the scorpio make any differnce in speed? or would it be just a case of jumping up in size, if thats the case then i will buy passport for the extra space.
would like performance boost tho

Speed is determined by the rpm and data density, the 80GB you have is either 80GB per platter or 40GB per platter, a 250GB drive is most likely 125GB per platter so the data density is higher than your 80GB one but I can't tell you the exact speed difference.
