I have an old laptop (p3 800 fujitsu siemens lifebook) and I am thinking that i would like something a little newer and with more features.

I am way behind on current CPU's (my fastest desktops run clocked up Socket A 2500's) and I need some advice as to what is what in the world of laptops.

I would probably use it for some video conversion and net browsing. I am unlikely to play games on it, I would probably watch the odd DVD on it.

I know Dell make some reasonable laptops at good prices but which cpu should I be looking for to meet my needs? Is a celeron going to be enough or should i really be looking for one of the new intel cores, what about the Turion based laptops?

I don't desperately want to spend over £600, I'd love to spend a lot less but I do want enough grunt for the video conversion so I am guessing 512mb RAM and at least 2.4Ghz processor.

You'll want a dual core cpu for video transcoding. Should be able to get one for that price, not 2.4ghz though they cost a few hundred;) Avoid acer.

Try dell and zepto.

I bought a Lenovo 3000 N100 last month for around £560, from a competitor though so can't tell you where.

Core Duo T2300
512mb Ram
Intel GMA950 Graphics
80gb HD
DVD RW
XP Pro

Can't recommend it enough, the speakers are a bit pitiful but when hooked up to headphones or a decent set of speakers I can't fault it.

Sorry to steal the thread, but how good are Zepto laptops?

Im interested in these now. They seem to be the best at the moment because you can customize most parts.

Cheers, sorry again.
