new lens advise needed

yep looks like its mine, will be getting it on tuesday(he's going to look in the loft for the box tomorrow).

what filter or some protecter should I use to keep the front of the lens free from dust and possible finger sumbdging(sp?) etc? the front of my kit lens has collected 'stuff' over the last 5years, its not bad enough to show up in the photos(that I've been able to notice) and the back I think is fine as the lens has been left on the camera as I have no others(only been taken off a handful of times, 1 being when I sent the body to be fixed).

lol nice, you'll have to post some of your first shots with it. Hopefully mine will come tomorrow or Tuesday. So do you just have the kit lens and this new one now? Really not worth buying filters for the kit lens as they cost as much as it would to just replace the lens lol. As for the 10-22, with it being so wide, normal filters will distort the corners of images so go for ultra slim filters to reduce their appearance in the frame. Definitely get a CP filter for those landscape shots! Up to you about any others like UV for protection, depends if you think its worth the expense and arguable reduction in image quality.

The wide end I am hoping will be covered by the 10-22, so I am after a good walkaround zoom lens. I also have 50mm F1.8 coming on tuesday.

It ll be mostly used for outdoor/landscape photography but will be used for indoors events also, I am hoping to learn more about night photography also so I thought the faster F2.8 lens would be a strong candidate.

greedy yes only the kit lens and now the 10-22mm, thinking about the 50mm 1.8(or the nifty fifty as I've seen it refered to on here, think it was scarysquirrel called it that) as well(wouldn't the kit lens at 50mm zoom be basically the same?).

the same guy is offering the 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 is usm for £150, what is that lens like and is that a good price?

the filter would be for the 10-22 not the kit lens(its too late for it any way) as I want to try and keep it as clean and damage free as possible after spending so much on it(yes I know its a drop in the ocen when it comes to the top lenses but I don't have money to burn). for the cp filter whats the size i need, the make/model etc?

also got the battery grip for the 300d off ebay for £52.99, buyer says its new in box so will see when I get it(won it today and it says 4-5 working days so like the following monday/tuesday, this friday if I'm lucky).

It would be the same focal length, yes. The nifty fifty is a well liked lens because of it's great sharpness and DOF capability but the trade off is the build quality.

Hunders I found that review when I googled for the reviews of the 28-135, sounds promising. think I might go for it, like the 24-105 f4l but that's a bit expensive.

king-core the 70-200 is on my list of lenses to get but will have to wait till after I've found a long term/permenent job, if I get both the 10-22 and 28-135 I'm looking at around £550 + cp for the 10-22 it's around £600(enough for the 40d or 500d body).

The 50mm is worth it for the price, fixed focal length lenses are generally sharper than zoom lenses and the f/1.8 gives a great depth of field for 'arty' shots which the kit lens can't do.

I've also got the 28-135mm myself, its a nice lens. The IS is only 2 stops unlike the 17-55 which has 3 stops however which is why its much cheaper. If your looking for a good quality and value medium telephoto lens its a good choice.

I'd say get a UV filter for the 10-22mm then, go for a slim one. As for CP filters, I have a Hoya one which works great. You'll need 77mm filters for that lens (big and more expensive).

Haha, I just bought a battery grip for my 400D too. Came day after and is excellent!

is £550 a good price for the 10-22(£400) and 28-135(£150)? trying to decide if I should get both now or just go with the 10-22 for now, then later on once I found a job get another lens(be it the 28-135 or some other lens).

I'm off to town to look at a couple of lenses and get the canon ef-s 10-22(and maybe the 28-135, still not 100%), I'm meeting the partner of the guy who I'm buying it from(he wouldn't be home till the evening so he's sending her with the lenses).

so I should have new lens/es when I get back home :)

the review of the b+w cp filter on the site that hunders linked to, mentions some issue with using cp filters with ultra wide lenses(can't remember off hand what it is, there's a pic on there to show the effect). The b+w filter reviewed is the slim version.

I only got the 10-22(its 2-3 years old according to the lady) in the end, it had dust on the front lens but the guy in lce wiped it off with a sigma micro fibre cloth(they sell them for £4.99). didn't see any scratches or damage on it as such, the guy in lce noticed sand around the outside(around the lens cap). no box with the lens, but I'll get that off them later(don't live too far from me).

asked about filters and the slim ones are around the £100 mark(is there really going to that noticable effect between regular and slim filters?), and also asked about the lens hood(is it worth getting one?) which is ~£30.

The non slim version will probably vignette (there will be black corners).

Get the slim... I recently purchased a Hoya HD polariser. I got it oer a B+W CPl for several reasons, and it was also sgnificantly cheaper. However, before I even used it it completely smashed up after a tiny knock. Buy a proper B+W filter is my advice.

Well... a UV filter does not do a lot for you other than offer some measure of protection from flying debris or possibly if you drop it and even in the best case scenario it's going to degrade the picture slightly. The hood on the other hand should offer better protection if you drop it, it'll help you get better shots with than without and the hood's cheap! Go go!

Personally I wouldn't bother with a filter unless it does something specific (for example a circular polarizer) or the lens is so expensive that paying an extra £100 is only a small part of the cost.

according to that even the slim cp filter causes the black corners, isn't easy enough to remove in photoshop? I don't have the money to be splashing out £200+ on filters(uv/protector&cp), as long a protector filter doesn't fall apart at the slightest touch and stops the lens getting scratched/damaged I'd be happy. is uv-haze filter the same thing as the uv filter(I'm seeing uv and uv-haze)?

edit: does the mrc version of the b+w cp filter offer much extra over the non mrc? on ebay the mrc version is almost double the pricr(this is for the slim, non-mrc is £56 and mrc is £106)

Got the battery grip today, wasn't expecting it till like friday. with it raining today not going to get a chance to try out the new lens, will do tomorrow as it's ment to me sunny with highs of 20/21oC. Just need to get the filter/s and hood now.

You bought the battery grip off eBay, right? Is it a genuine Canon one or a copy?

The reason I ask is because I have been looking at the copies, which are much cheaper, on eBay and was wondering what the build quality and use is like.

It's ment to be genuine canon, at least it says so on the box(canon eos accessories) and in the description from the seller. only got it in the last hour and not tried it yet so can't say what it's like to use, i'm not going to have any issues with 1 battery being canon and the other jessops?

the camera bag I have is looking a little small now, would need a bigger one especially if I buy any more lenses.

I fitted the battery grip a few hour earlier and tried taking a few shots with it on(kit lens not the 10-22 yet), think I need to get used to it a bit more. I've red that it comes into its own more when you fit heavier lenses on, I will see when I try the 10-22 as thats heavier than the kit lens.

can I get a reply about the mrc(multi-resistance coating) vs non-mrc b+w cp filter, as I mentioned the mrc one is nearly double the price. as I'm not a pro or even a advanced-amateur will I see enough benefit from spending over £100 on the cp filter?

is there much difference between kenko and hoya(apart from the obv price difference), been looking on ebay for filters and it ays that the kenko and hoya are made in the same factory.

i use the hoya pro-1 UV(0) on my sigma 70-200 and i also use the jessops CP. both different quality and both work equally well. you pays your money you takes your choise..

re the grip - its personal preference really. people reckon they add balance to the body for larger lenses but the 20D on the sig 70-200 is perfectly balanced anyway. or they help increase the grip on the smaller of the canon bodies.

i see it was mentioned earlier, if you want a cheaper alternative to the canon 70-200 then take a look at the sigma.
