Hmm. Parents have asked for a new webcam, but it's a technology I don't claim to know or understand. Cameras are supposed to look at other people. :p

So, for a casual user (mostly Skype, I suspect), are these overkill?

One thing I did notice in the specs - 1Mbps Upload? Who in the UK can get that sort of speed out of a home broadband connection?

depends on the quality of pic you want to send, the 4.99 cheapees dont usually give a decent output.
regarding upload speed, i would imagine theres quite a few that will be able to upload at that speed these days , esp as 21cn evolves.

For your parents usage, the £19.99 one is more then they need, will give good quaility sound and picture, you only need the fast upload if u are gonna take advantage of the HD aspect of it, u don't need to, but its a nice feature for future usage.

Im considering replacing my old phillips webcam with that £20 one, as the others that are 720p and are more, only offer more megapixels for photo's and well i can use my phone or camera for that lol.

Id deffinatly say aim at getting that, as like perry said, the cheapo webcams are just that, yes they will broadcast video, but at poor quality, get a branded name, and jobs a good un.

my C910 should arrive tomorrow (have a UPS tracking number), in the early reviews they said the software was a bit rubbish hopefully that's fixed.

Interested but unsure as to the quality, can someone whose bought one post an image using it? Also howcome they are so cheap!

a still from outside my window.
Still 1080p image

the logitech software does a poor job of auto-converting video but the cam does show up as a standard directshow device so i captured from virtualdub.
filter pins only allow 15fps max however virtualdub allows me to change to 30fps not sure but it may just be doubling frames.

Logitech Interface

Video Capture from the logitech software 9MB

from the logitech software.
Code:
Audio: Windows Media Audio 48000Hz stereo 191Kbps [Raw Audio 0]
Video: Windows Media Video 8 1920x1080 15.00fps 4035Kbps [Raw Video 1]

from a virtualdub cap.
Code:
Video: I420 1920x1080 15.00fps 361208Kbps [Video 0]
Audio: PCM 96000Hz stereo 3072Kbps [Audio 1]

deadite66 thanks for the images and clip, just looking at the video now.

couple of questions if i may...

1. how does it feel ? .. solidly built or a bit worrying if you drop it say
2. how's it's mounting/stand options, as it looks like they are designed mainly to hook over monitors primarily
3. Is the software as bad/slow/buggy as reported ? is it heavy on load and constantly trying to connect out ? (i've used split cam in the past as it served very well to control the cam without the need for the logitech bloatware)
4. software again, does it load/install a bunch of useless crap you dont want/need ?
5. Resolution, shifting it down to 720p output, does it perform as well as expected ? or maybe a little better than a 720p max cam ? (subjective opinion obviously)
6. Connection, i'm assuming USB only no other options available, and also i take it no USB 3 support ?
7. How does it cope in low light situations ?

thanks for your time

the bitrate is 4mb, usb2 can handle 34mb so USB3 would be of no benefit.

Video quality looks pretty good, you should see if Sony Vegas Pro allows you to record with it. Please post a sample of the video you recorded with virtualdub, i'll check it for duplicate frames for you.

What cpu do you have, maybe it dropped it to 15fps due to slow cpu?

Gunslinger:
1. it feels fairly well built but the camera part is plastic
2. the mount is heavy and stiff so it clamps well, i suspect the weight of it will make it hit the floor first should it be dropped.

3 & 4. only found one bug so far, failed to autofocus after trying to fiddle with manual mode. fixed on a program restart.
5% cpu on the desktop in my sig, not really any bloat, never needed the discs W7 x64 recognised it and fetched the logitech software which gave the option of what to install, boils down to the main app, motion detection addon, effects addon and logitech video (if you have enough bandwidth to chat at that res).

5. first HD cam i've had so can't really give much of an option just to say it still looks very good, the logitech app isn't the best software to compare as the image is scaled and stays the same size between 720p and 1080p.

6. only certified for usb 2.0

7. i think it handles it very well, room looks bright with my 11W CFL.

clocka:

deleted 75MB 7z'ed to 26MB, 1 second long hope its enough.
recorded on the desktop in my sig.

15fps is the limit on the directshow pins, see jpgs.

there didn't seem to be any dupe frames, you'd need to move the camera around and cut a sample of 3secs+ to be able to tell for sure if it can do 30fps. Its a shame the drivers don't enable 30fps though :(

thanks for the answers and stuff, t's getting late here now so will pop backtomorrow to read through, thanks especially for the mount info and pics, i'm not looking to mount it to the top of my monitor so this is useful info :) ... i see it attracts finger prints :p

no duplicate frames in it :) You should ask on the logitech forums if they will add support for 30fps in the next firmware.

not having support for 30fps out of the box is a little poor to be honest, on something the are touting as a 1080p "pro" version ..... not good, and funny how any reference to fps is missing from their specifications page, i guess they can't be accused of lying if they simply dont provide the info !

Also no Skype HD compatibility yet

As i'm not looking to use it on a laptop, or on top of my monitor (27" monitor just puts the cam way too high !) I need to know how it sits on a regular surface, which it loks like it can, although no rubber feet on that side of the mount surface so it scoots around fairly easily !

picture0002ni.jpg

there seems to be a general shift away from this kind of arrangement leaving the digital camcorders as the way many desktop users go, thus saving them buying 2 items ! ... logitch used to do that sphere thing which kinda interested me, but i never bothered with it as i have a 4000 pro cam and didnt think it was worth the cost of the upgrade for what would have only been a small improvement, so waited until these higher def ones were available.

here's an unboxing and demo review of it, he does 2 sample recordings/previews towards the end showing results from the windows based logitech software and from quicktime on the mac as the logitech stuff is not compatible (interestingly his caption states 1080p @ 30fps) Autofocus function appears to work quite well
