New macbook..

Just got my grubby mits on a macbook. Any apps you guys think i should have for it. Am new to the whole mac world..... wish me luck!

right, i must be officially stupid..... I have tried to use 3 instant messaging apps, adium, amsn and msn for mac. Every time i try to connect, it just keeps say cannot connect to server and im not connect to t'internet, yet i am able to post this message.....

System Preferences -> Security -> Firewall - check settings, make sure you've allowed incoming connections for those app's.

Have got it to connect to msn after long last...... yay! But now when using adium, i occasionally get errors in the message boxes saying it cant connect to the switchboard.

Any suggestions?

Are you connecting using HTTP method, somewhere in account settings? Not on my Mac at the moment, can't remember precisely where.

You don't have a Netgear router do you?

My thoughts exactly, I have a Netgear DG834GT and with the latest firmware IM apps (Adium, MSN, aMSN) just won't connect unless its over HTTP. I had to downgrade the firmware to get them to work properly.

found where to downgrade, what version did you downgrade to?

Downgraded to V1.02.09, as far as I can remember 1.02.13 and 14 both have the same problem and Netgear won't do anything about it as it is considered end of life.

Not had any other problems with 1.02.09 btw.
