Don't people find the new MacBook over priced compare to base MacBook Pro? I don't understand why people would get MacBook over the £999 pro

You're comparing two very different products

The pro is designed for professional use, photoshop, video/music production on the go etc etc. The macbook is designed for portability and lightweight.

You also can't get the pro in gold or rose gold colours

Some of us have both :p

My MBP is my power machine, I take it when I require something with some horsepower, or if I'm going to be at a single site all day for example.

My Macbook I use as my travel buddy. Meetings, holidays, when I'm generally out and about and just don't need the power of of my rMBP.

Bit daft for you? Don't buy it then, buy a MBP.

Fair point guys.

I like it be portable as it for when I am away etc I've a iMac for my power work. I don't think the MacBook will handle Lightroom?

The MacBook has the early adopter price premium going on at the moment. It'll drop over time, or perhaps the upcoming redesigned MBP's will be more expensive... but not while they're still selling the stocks they have of MacBook Airs, a legacy product counting it's final days and their entry level offering. Although the next MBP will be light and thin enough that the Air will have no reason to exist, like the iPod Classic they'll probably be available to buy for longer than it really should before quietly giving it the chop.

If you look at the CPU benchmarks in the above review there's isn't actually much difference in performance between the 13" rMBP and the new 12" Macbook. Also the entry level MBP comes with a miserly 128GB SSD so to match the Macbook you'll almost certainly want to spend the extra for the 256Gb version which is several hundred more than the Macbook.

Personally given the current MBP has been out for years and is based on a fairly old chipset/CPU/design I think the Macbook is a much better buy if you want a new laptop right now. That might change in a couple of months time when Apple refresh the MBP though.

I’m not sure if this is the right topic, but what do you think about the keyboard on the Macbook? I type a lot so it’s really important for me that I can comfortably type. I’ve tried the keyboard out once and I don’t like the feel of it, it’s somehow "stiff" and not that comfortable in my opinion. Currently, I prefer the keyboard on the MBP but I might buy a Macbook soon and I’m not sure if I simply need to get used to it or if it’s in fact a worse keyboard.

Funny you should mention that as that's exactly what I felt having tried it briefly in the store for 15 minutes. I really struggled to touch type on it without making errors. As you say the keys felt stiff. I felt like typing was actually uncomfortable as I was bottoming out the keypresses since there was no travel and I couldn't easily tell if I'd pressed the button or not. I think I was typing more heavily than usual to compensate for the lack of travel. I think I actually preferred using the touchscreen on my ipad to type over the Macbook keyboard on first impressions.

Some people say you get used to it after a while and they actually like the keyboard but I kind of feel having used QWERTY keyboards for 30 years that there shouldn't really be any kind of learning curve as I already know how to type!

I'm trying to decide whether I should buy this or wait for the new Macbook Pro's rumoured to be out in June (though there's every chance they might end up with a similar short travel keyboard!). Other than the keyboard I really like everything else about the Macbook and think it would make a perfect portable laptop to complement my desktop.

Would I get used to that keyboard in time though......

I swap between the MacBook, the pro, and my iMac quite regularly - can't say I really notice that much which I'm using.

Does feel a bit off to start with, but you forget about it after a while.

I've got a base 2014 13" MBA (i5, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD). I mainly use it for web browsing, watching videos whilst away (outputting to TV) with the odd bit of work in Office.

I can't work out if the base 2016 rMB would be a step up or down?

^ this :)

I've got a 15'' rMBP which is mainly used as a "desktop workstation". Will take it out when I need grunt. However I wanted a light weight laptop to take when I go on holiday so picked up a MacBook 12. It's a fantastic bit of kit. Really light weight, had about 8+ hours of battery life watching videos on the plane

i bought one of the 12" macbooks when they first come out, ended up selling it and buying a customized spec air, screen is not as good but its much more powerful.

Was there anything in particular you found that ran slowly on the Macbook as from the benchmarks it looks pretty close in performance to the Macbook Air ?
