New MacMini & iMacs?

I'm going to stick with my 2012 2.6ghz i7 16GB with Sammy SSD, screw the new one. Not worth replacing, will wait for the next one.....

I have the same machine with same upgrades and it runs Yosemite with concurrent Parallels win 7 a dream... apart from the graphics it's a fast little box :)

Pretty gutted about the new Mac Minis having soldered on RAM. Seems such a backwards step. More money for Apple though I guess.

You can upgrade the iMac ram yourself, can save a couple hundred if you're looking to put in 32GB like me.

Not so impressed by the graphics card on offer, but I don't play games that often and the hardware should retain its value pretty well if I decide to trade up when the next version comes along.

The 27" Retina iMac is pretty much the same price as the non-Retina version when specced similarly. That is mind-blowing.

Hopefully we see high-DPI being a thing and other OSes (looking at you here Windows) gain non-terrible support for it.

Managed to set up the new base mac mini 2014 as a htpc. It's running transmission, filebot, automatic and plex server/player. Everything works fine with no slowdown or issues. I can watch a full blu ray copy of Avater while streaming to my ipad and torrenting with no issues, uses up maybe 20% cpu doing this. Memory is also not an issue running this stuff.

The only thing is the stock HD is sooooooooo sloooooooow. Boot times and application launch times are awful. Luckily being an htpc these things are all left running so once it's started it fine.

Framerates look fine, it displays playing at 23.98 instead of 23.976 however I can't detect any frame issues and the monitor in both xbmc and plex don't show any skipped frames. Maybe it can't show the true framerate due to os x's limitation but is somehow working properly anyway. The apple remote works in both plex player and xbmc really well. I'm actually thinking of removing xbmc and just using the plex player. xbmc is slightly nicer but it needs more setup to either use plex server or have filebot call out to it to tell it to update it's library on media add.

Using automatic, filebot and transmission is really nice, it all adds up to a fully automated system which also emails on media add as well.

Ordered the following:

27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display
4.0GHz QC i7 Turboboost 4.4GHz
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM-2X4GB
3TB Fusion Dr (3TB+128GBFlash)
AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB GDDR5
APPLE MAGIC MOUSE
APPLECARE

Going to get 32GB RAM from elsewhere and upgrade it straight away, I opted for the 3TB drive rather than the SSD as I have a lot of media and don't want an external drive cluttering up my desk.

7-10 working days for delivery :(

That sounds good Dan F, thanks - I've been planning for one myself :)

Which one are you running, the base spec model with the 1.4 i5 or another?

500gb lappy unit, feels like it's a 5400rpm one as well

Yeah, they are and they suck on anything past OS X 10.6!

I chucked a small SSD in my 2009 Mini after the stock HDD started developing bad sectors a few months ago, and it's transformed the reponsiveness.

yep base spec one. I've got an old 60gb ssd I'll probably put in it later on as all the media stuff is on external drives.

Once all the software is running there's no delays or issues.

Good news :) I was going to grab the mid-model but think I will get the base spec and try it out. I have a spare 50GB SSD laying around, so can stick that in and use the 500 as an external.

Hi Guys, I have never owned a mac.. however this now appeals to me. How quiet is the mac mini? I was thinking of using at as my stand alone music player. I'd love to chuck all my music on it and just connect optical out to my Dac and be done with it.

GFU? Sorry, don't understand.

Might also help if you can advise what you'll be using the Mac for and if you are looking at the Mini or iMac...
