Like an idiot I bought a new mATX case thinking I could easily get hold of a Z97 mobo to fit... I'm having a lot of difficulty! So I'm consigned to look at alternatives on the market, ideally I want this to be a cheap upgrade but understand this is probably going to cost me quite a bit.

I am however unsure whether I should be burning my clothes and seeking help as I'm considering AMD and Ryzen, can anyone give a steer on what would offer comparable performance to my 4790k? Also are these actually reliable and good quality? A friend previously had an old AMD processor and had nothing but issues.

ebay for second hand z97 matx or see if you can return case and get ATX verison ?

can see a few boards listed, a GENE form germany going!

most sensible plan, but ofc if you're downsizing...

no point tbh. more of a sidegrade than an upgrade. 4790k is still a very capable cpu. also need to factor in getting new ddr4 ram which cost a lot at present

Raijintek Thetis and Jonsbo UMX4 internally and thetis externally are smaller then 50% of mATX cases out there :)

Thanks for your advice guys, I've found a Z97 mATX motherboard so I'm going to stick with that for the time being.

Appreciate all the help.

nah, will be fine :) will just bolt into ITX fittings it seems but be bigger and slightly shorter then full matx size :)
Uh oh, here's hoping it works :D

Figured no point in buying new CPU and RAM right now as it's still going strong. Will hold off a while and do a proper new build.

april maybe a good month for you- either killer deals floating or ryzen+ ends up being good! im hoping all these leaks of base clock and boost being 200hz higher - means 2600 will hit 4.1/2Ghz overclock with 3400/3600 ram as standard - i have a feeling these leaked scores are more down to faster ram being used
