New Mercedes Benz A Class (2012)

I like it, and will be watching this closely as a possible replacement for the GTI at some point.. lets see if the dealer is going to be sensible and not over-inflate the price though, as they usually do with Merc & BMW

Not sure if it undocks but the A class will be the first third party system to use Apple Siri programme. Also the nav has a phone connect and view system. Ie the screen mimics what you would see on your phone!

The fact it looks more like an Ipad than typical car screen is probably to narrow the gap in customer expectation. Mercedes will be offering apps from their own store for example.

Why not just tape an iPad to the dash?

Then you won't get integrated functionality with an iPad/tablet/Tom Tom

I don't see what the problem is - there isn't a rule stating the screen for an integrated nav/command centre for a car has to be inside the dash.

The problem is that it looks ****, makes it look like something aftermarket. It should blend with the dash etc like in other models.

There's not a rule but that doesn't mean it somehow doesn't look like a tacked on afterthought, rather than an integral part of the dash layout that has been sensibly and thoughtfully designed in.

It looks like the designers finished the interior, were ready to ship it and someone from marketing burst through the door with an iPad demanding they find somewhere to put it :p

I do agree that a pop-out/properly integrated screen job would have looked so much more sleeker. That tom-tom lookalike screen could attract thieves, no?

Rest of the car looks great though.

I actually like the screen the way it is. On most modern car's it's more integrated into the dash but it looks like a cave or something going in making a big deal of it.

I doubt that's the reason. If direct sunlight is hittibg a screen then it'll be from the rear mirror. And most screens are decent now sunlight makes very litteke difference. It's just the integrated design of some cars I don't like. typing on iphone excuse typos.
