New Metallica single - The Day That Never Comes

I thought it was good and a much better effort than Saint Anger but my instantaneous first thought was "this sounds almost exactly like the unforgiven riff :-/"

Typical Metallica since Justice: Astounding skill but forgot all about content ended up sticking to the stuff that worked years ago, trouble is it got stale years ago too.

Just how pedestrian is that drum beat?
There's a guy at my work can play his desk better than the drums on that track.

It's the way drums are recorded. Early metallica's drums, after 1st album were recorded tight, very precise (as much as a full force player can be), gates, bright bass drum, short kicks etc - then around black album it changed to slightly darker, still gated and studio controlled sound - sounded a bit generic, but relatively tight. Now it sounds like a random job in a pub - deep snares miked from above and open until you hear the whole mount rattling from crazy whooping, short slaps of floppy membranes in bass drums, ride cymbals driven so hard the sound distorts and full force sniping shots of crash reverbating like a a leader of russian military band pounding them clash cymbals on a double for Stalin.
I need to hear it in higher bitrate, but there is a moment I think I hear that stupid squeeling bass pedal from St. Anger sliding across the floor again.

Fade to Black rehash?

Still, as already mentioned it sounds better than anything on St. Rubbish. I'd quite like to see them @ Reading this weekend but there's now way I'd pay the amount of money day tickets are going for, especially given the rest of the lineup.

It feels messy and like it's lacking cohesion. I can't say I like the production on Hetfields voice - it sounds like they have undermixed him a bit but then I almost think that it's more about his voice. Like some of the other guys have been saying - it sounds like they're trying to recapture Justice and Master days. But then it might just be down to the bitrate.

St Anger was an appallingly bad album and it still sounds a little like Hetfield is still stuck in the same vocal melodic range. At least they are allowing Hammetts solos back into the fore. It's not a horrible sound and infinitely better than Anger but still sounds a bit 'graspy'.

You say it as if his solos are good :o:p

Still, no wah :)

Yeah I think he is a guitarist worth some admiration. I think Anger did him a disservice. LOL Wah... :D

On about the 4th re-listen - it's not a bad tune at all. It is listenable and it is growing on me. Oddly the melody at 2:47 reminds me of the track 'California Dreaming' by the Mamas and the Papas - weird.

Anyone else think it just sounds like a re-hash of about 10 old Metallica tracks rolled into one? The sort of tune Weird Al would come up with if he was taking the P out of them.

That was my first thought.

Me three :D

Bit of Unforgiven, Fade to Black, Sanitarium and One.

Having said that it is infinitely better than anything on SA and is quite growing on me although as two separate songs. Anyone else think the bridge at about 4.30 into the outro just doesn't work? And the Outro doesn't work in connection with the rest of the song? Also the main riff kind of reminds me of echo beach.

Greatly relieved though, saw them in Dublin on Wed night and thought Cyanide sounded pretty good as well so there is hope that Death Magnetic might actually be a decent album

And the Outro doesn't work in connection with the rest of the song?
The outro reminds me of One a bit with its fast riff bit to start it off. Except the riff in this one sounds a bit weird at the end and doesn't sound as good.

I look forward to hearing more of the album. I hope the songs are not so long, Metallica songs would be much better if they were shorter, even by a minute or so.

Well to me it sounds like a mix between One, St Anger and Iron Maiden's Trooper and just sounds odd. I'd like to hear it again in CD quality to completely dismiss it :p

absolutely superb stuff, its a typical 'tallica' formula that works .. im glad its actually like the superb St.Anger with new production and some Re-Load riffing... raw and polished

Loving it!

Im so glad that they didn't take the Nu-Metal route. If you listen to a lot of Metallica then they all sound the same its their own sound (apart from St.Anger). Really looking forward to this album!

This is what St.Anger should have sounded like.

I havent heared this yet, gunna listen to it tonight.

Im quite excited actually, i consider myself a big fan and i was very dissapointed with St Anger.

"The Good Album That Never Comes" would be more fitting. :D

I'll hold judgement till the full album though, never been a real fan of them and hated St. Anger.

I like it. Miles better than the majority (if not all) the songs on St Anger like many have said and the guitar solo's have been sorely missed. Some parts of it sound like more of a jam session - in and around the solo that make it a bit strange but other than that a decent song

a vast improvement over recent effort but still goes to prove that Lars sounds crap on drums EVEN with Rick Ruben as producer.

Could have easily been 4 mins tho, they padded the song out to much, if they just cut to the chase it would have been superb.
