Hello

I'm building a new mini-atx from your website. max budget is about ~500/550

I need i5 or i7 quad core to go with a small case like this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-066-AK

And this SSD:

So far I have only seen this mobo that is compatible with that case:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-455-GI

and then i7:

Would that work? Or 120w supply is not enough ?? The cpu takes 77W

I also have a ram SO-DIMM 1600mhz 1.35v that i arleady bought, would it work with this mobo????

So far this costs me £431.92

I want to run 24/7 a couple of web servers on it and maybe a game server. I will probably end up putting linux or windows server 2012 on it. (arleady have license key)

Just looking to build something quiet, low power and very small.

I have looked at NUCs, but they are only dual cores, and i would like more performance.

The question is though... Will i7 run on this case?? Case has external 120w and cpu runs at 77w

I personally would go for at least a 250 watt power supply, cpu alone is 77 watt and with the rest of the components you will be pushing past 120 watt if everything goes full whack...

I see where your coming from, 99% of the time I suppose you would be fine....as the cpu running @ 50% usage most of the time would be be 35- 40 watts

so yea everything would work.

I like to build on what maximum power could be drawn...that way you know for sure your within the limits....

120 watt will be fine for that build. I assume you will be using a Pico in which case the Pico only deals with 3.3 and 5 volt lines, the 12 volts comes direct from the power brick, so be sure you get a good quality brick or 12 volt will not be stable. Probably with the 5+- Intel tolerance, but worth shopping for quality to avoid any issues. I doubt if it needs an i7 though..........I would look at i3 or i5 with lower wattage. No mention of how you intend to cool the CPU either,, what have you planned? The height limits will restrict your choice, and one big enough to cool decently may well rob you of a RAM slot, leaving just one. Best look for one with high TDP that does not broach the Intel ITX CPU footprint. Good planning is better than trial and error, unless you can afford to fry things.

Right okay, i just realised this motherboard only supports up to 8gb ram which is no good at all.

Can you guys advise me on any mini-itx build? I want it to be very very small. I5/i7 or a decent amd apu and AT LEAST 8 gb of ram, I would love to have SO-DIMM motherboard compatible too.

any ideas please?

I have a Mini ITX box based on a Sandy Bridge Pentium G850 with 4GB RAM inside an Antec ISK110. 1 60GB SSD and 1 320GB WD Scorpio Blue all off the bundled 90W power brick. Runs Windows 2008 Server for a number of uses (IIS with PHP, DHCP, DNS, torrent box, basic NAS, bit of media streaming) and it's really great.

I think you need to do some serious research on hardware capabilities before you make any decisions, you are trying to make a heavy gaming PC that belongs in a full size or at best M-ATX case.........Unrealistic ITX recipe is the problem

I'm confused now. Do you want to build a server or a gaming rig?

8GB RAM is more than enough for the server usage you described to begin with. A gaming rig also won't really need more than 8GB either, although if you're wanting to use an APU then 16GB of very fast RAM would be better since the GPU portion will share system RAM.

But like I said, clarify what you want to do so we can best advise.

Nothing unrealistic about building a high-end gaming system in a Mini ITX form factor, you just need to be very aware of space requirements and (in my case) sometimes get a dremel out.

I want to run game servers and I arleady mentioned it in previous posts.

All I want is a good CPU 16gb ram and mini itx size as small as possible

I could probably buy intel nuc but the ones on ur website are dual core only

Yeah, but you then started talking about wanting a decent APU which confused the issue - why would you want a mainstream gaming-capable chip in a server?.

Nonetheless, you want to run some servers. Cool. I think though you need to research what the exact requirements for the servers are and how many users you're going to have connected to each server at any one time, because that will determine your spec.

I say this because having a decent APU is a waste (why do you need any gaming or media playback capability?) and 16GB is likely to be overkill unless you're doing a lot at once. Same goes for a quad core CPU.

Also consider that you're possibly thinking form over function here too. You're looking at a Thin ITX board simply because you want that tiny Akasa case and you have (possibly prematurely) bought a SODIMM? Or is there a specific reason you're looking at Thin ITX?

As I posted earlier, I'm running a Windows 2008 server for a lot of network and web dev stuff in an Antec ISK110 with 90W power brick. That case is smaller than a piece of A4 paper and not much thicker than the I/O shield. but in that case I have 2 2.5" drives and the Sandy Bridge Intel stock cooler and it's all cool and silent.

So I think you'd be better off looking at "normal" Mini ITX, not Thin ITX to give yourself a few more options - Thin ITX is really intelligent signage and kiosk-level stuff so is designed to be very low power and quite limited in performance.

Well as long as it's very quiet then I don't mind a normal mini itx case. I want to run a lot of things at the same time so perhaps VoIP server with 512 slots. 2-3 game servers, web server. I mentioned apu because perhaps it would've been nice if I could sometimes play archeage on lowest details on 2 accounts. I already have a gaming rig that I use for gaming. But if it would be possible for me to get mini itx and a very very quiet psu then that's ok

Well as I said the Antec ISK110 comes with a 90W power brick so it's silent, and is more than enough to run my dual core Pentium G850, 4GB RAM, 1 SSD and 1 laptop drive. Intel stock cooler too, so I could easily run a quad core without heating or power issues.

Check the various system requirements for the things you want to run as it will give you a rough idea of what sort of components you'll need and then I/we can spec you something.

I think you'd be better renting a dedicated server rather than buying the parts for your own.

You're going to spend a lot to have outdated equipment, already running into compatibility problems and are going to stress your internet connection if you are running multiple servers simultaneously.

If you rent it'll not be seen or heard at all and much more resilient than a server on a residential internet line.
