looking to "update" my little itx, to something smaller and newer :)

Currently I have (as per sig)

lian li q08b
dfi p55 itx
8gb ram
i7 920
corsair aio
corsaire 620 hx psu
nvidia gtx 570
tb hdd

Its HOT, a bit loud and a bit too big (i've got the "Lets make a tiny pc" itch)

Throwing ideas around, I'd love to stick to itx, however deep down I'd love an matx setup (to SLI in the future) and a parvum. If that parvum itx ever came to sell I'd be all over it though...

what I'm looking at:

OcUK Geforce GTX 780 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £359.99
(id like silence, so prolly look for a gigabyte WF or something)

Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £245.99
(worth it, really? I tried ocing my i7 and well, the dfi aint great so its at stock, ive never been much of an overclocker!)

Asus Z87 MAXIMUS VI IMPACT Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ITX Motherboard £173.99
(worth it if im not ocing loads? Chosen because its the best, ngff etc, but was also looking at the MSI itx)

TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit £119.99
(I 3d model and game, ram is good)

Silverstone Strider Plus 600W Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (SST-ST60F-P) £71.99
(size wise, mentioend below, 600W will be ample for this rig)

Silverstone SST-SG08B-Lite USB 3.0 Sugo Mini-ITX - Black £49.99
(Tiny good looking case, there was that french ITX but I cant remember the name? Im after something tiny)

Total : £1,021.53

plus: 250gb ish SSD, cpu cooler. ~£200quid?

Need a bit of help though! Which cooler should I get? My current AIO jobbie gets too hot in my lian li, end of. PC shuts down/crashes/BSOD's whenever i play games etc and its annoying. If I can get a stonker of an air cooler thats quiet and decent i;ll go for that, if not ill try and squeeze a kraken in ;)

Also, with that psu will it be too big for the case + gfx card?

From silverstone website:
Expansion Card
Support expansion cards up to 12.2” long, width 4.84”*
Limitation of CPU cooler 147mm

This is going to take a little while to come up with the cash, just started new job so this will be a treat once pay starts coming in, I'll be MM'ing and scouting for deals so shouldn't take too long.

Discuss/help? :D

I'd give the Impact a miss if you're not much of an overclocker. The MSI Gaming ITX is supposed to be very good. That would be my choice.

The blower style cooler on the reference 780 will do your temps the world of good in a small case. It isn't too loud, either. I had to put another couple exhaust fans in my Parvum when I switched from the reference card to a custom one.

Speaking of the Parvum...just give in to its charm ;) :D

EDIT: You can probably keep your PSU if you want.

will be passing my current system on probably so it needs to be in a working state, means I can't yoink things from it unfortunately!

Interesting about the card, have seen a ref blower with a custom duct on the end in an sg08 so will potentially do that. With the msi the base system is under £1k now which is good!

edit:

so found a mod with a push pull config 280mm rad and 4 noctuas, think I might strive to do something like that :D

Also: Silverstone at Cebit:
600watt, flat cabled sff psu? Oh my.

decided to go for something special case wise :)

going to stagger the build so ill get some this month, some the following months, and in between ill mod as much as i can! I'll start a proper build log, but at the moment im looking towards:

parvum itx, ive fallen for the looks of the parvum and nothing comes close! in talks now about colours etc.

silverstone sfx 450 psu (having read up a lot about this, 450w can take on a 780ti so no worries from me anymore!) and the case cant hold anything bigger than an sfx!

watercooling (AIO), id love a kraken x40 but theres only a 120mm fan space at he front of the case...

and then next round ill update my cpu/ram/mobo/graphics/ssd. Oh and also a logitech k810 keyboard. Used to have a dinovo edge and the k810 looks so sleek.

edit: just saw this: MSI Z97I Gaming.

Sounds like a plan!

I have the Silverstone 450W gold-rated modular SFX PSU running my Titan ITX rig. Bulletproof PSU but it is a little noisy. Still highly-recommended though

I have to admit, i'd be tempted to stick to the same case, PSU, CPU cooler, and even RAM (as someone who upgraded from 8GB to 16GB, it's nice to have but doesn't make much difference to gaming/general usage at this point).

Also the 4770K isn't really worth it over the 4670K unless you really want hyperthreading.

And the R9 290 is better value than the GTX780. Ideally you want the Sapphire one with the Tri-X cooler.

I 3d model/game design so ram is needed and will be used :)

My only main gripe at the mo is heat, im talking 80degrees gpu on load and 50degrees cpu, and everytime I load a game itll crash after half an hour or so. Its so frustrating and I cant figure it out.
Oh and lan drivers on mobo not being supported in windows so I have to disable and re enable the ethernet everytime I reboot lol

It is tempting due to so much changing and coming out soon, ddr4, refreshes here and new sockets there...

I spose... Cpu cooler(and an oc? Im running stock atm), graphics card (ive always had nvidia, physx stuff etc in game engines) ssd, id be Ok for a while but damn that upgrade itch and parvum itx....

I think the case thermals is more due to the setup than the case though - the Q08 is quite a highly regarded enclosure in the SFF world.

I would also like to add that 80C GPU and 50C CPU is not bad thermals at all. If you think they are then the GTX780 is going to give you a huge shock. :)

By all means swap out motherboard, CPU, RAM, HDD, and graphics but unless you really want a change from the Lian-Li it's a decent case and will still serve you well - PSU included.

well i have been out of the loop for a good few years so, im just guestimating galore :P

decided to have a play just, stuck my corsair H60 onto my 140 front fan and made a push pull config, cpu is currently sat at 30degrees and gpu at 50 (ive got chrome open and thats it)

Apparently i have speed and turbo mode enabled for my cpu on bios and my cpu is fluttering around 3 to 3.5ghz lol.

gw2 is pushing 45 degrees cpu and 70 gpu, see if it crashed now!

intriguing. I thought the gpu hitting 80 was causing the crashes.

edit, annnd it crashed. ha

You have some serious system instability if you're crashing while CPU and GPU are well under thermal thresholds. Sounds like a total system strip down, clean and OS reinstall is in order, and then run some stress-testing progs to see where the problem lies.

No way should you be crashing at temps that low.

I have a i5 2500 cooled with a Corsair H60 and GTX Titan crammed into a Silverstone SG05 with zero trouble. The CPU never goes above 50 degrees and the H60 fan is running on a non-existent 800 RPM. The Titan at full tilt never hits 90 degrees. My case is a damn sight smaller and more cramped than your Lian Li, so I'd really check your existing components for stability and redo your OS.

its nice to hear "well under thermal thresholds" I was fretting for a bit! haha.

I'll get backuping and reinstalling and report back!

I dont get it, running some stress tests atm, hdd checks are fine, been running furmark for about 30mins ago and its been fine, tipping 86degrees but no crashes,

ran prime burn for about 20 mins and it hasn't crashed, will mem check on reboot but :/

I do not understand!

little update!

deciding to wait a little untill the new sockets etc come out and i'll have some money to play with. However these errors are killing me:

Kernel Power - Event ID 41 - Task Category 63. Seems a generic windows error, relating to realtek audio, enabling c-state and whatever else, blah. Will try different sata ports aswell and then reinstalling windows. I might go back to win 7 so my lan controller fixes too but I do quite like windows 8.

For now, just ordered a logitech k810 :) will complement the desk and im sick of my generic clackety dell affair
.
On the parvum itx front, deciding on colours then will get it ordered, black and blue or black and purple and some little tweaks. In no rush so will grab the silverstone psu in time.

Thats what I like to hear! It juwt looks so sleek, and I miss my old dinovo edge. Will connect it to my pc and TV (samsung 46 es8000) which is my main pc screen on my desk at the moment, killing my eyes sat so close to it haha. But a long hdmi cable will allow for gaming in bed, will have to get a wireless ps3 controller working too.

Getting a load of ikea furniture too so its turning into a complete project now!

Will be ordering the parvum and psu next week hopefully! (psu in stock on ocuk now!) Maybe an ssd if I can find one cheap, and ill put my mechanical hdd in an external housing to help with making a silent rig.

little update,

got a 480gb seagate ssd and a usb3 caddy for my mech hdd, keeping everything nice and silent in the main case now :)

Reinstalled windows and still getting restarts/bsod's so the plan will be to get a new mobo/cpu (and possibly use my current ram) this month, and then the following months, get some new ram, a parvum itx and the strider psu. Oh and then a graphics card!

I'd be looking at your RAM closer, leave memtest going overnight.

Those synthetic benchmarks are not exactly ram intensive.

Could also be PSU related, or just drivers. Are your audio drivers up to date, you mentioned that was the error, I'd also try rolling back one version if they are the latest.

the latest bsod was due to windows update lol, but i shall be doing some proper tests now, previously i did memtest for 3 or 4 passes and it was fine, but i'll pop it on overnight and see how she goes.

plus side, my lan wasnt connected again so had to disable/enable in device manager BUT i just managed to install network drivers (couldn't previously) so there is hope yet.

next will be tackling audio drivers.

Note: my psu before the reinstall:

z97 soon anyway, excited!
