New mmo

Having played both, wait for WAR.

AoC is (still) totally unfinished despite FC having had a good few months to fix things. Fun until about level 40/50, then just becomes a repetitive grind. No end-game content either. Will be a good game in another 8-10 months or so I reckon.

WAR is a lot easier to level in (you don't realise you are doing it half the time), the PvP is fun and there is a good backstory to the quests. Obviously, still being in beta, it is unfinished, but I certainly have had a lot more fun even with character wipes and restarts than I ever did in AoC.

Having said that, if your idea of fun is racing others to get 40 crocodile skins, then go for AoC on a buddy key.

Having Played Aoc a fair bit and experiencing it first hand (Level 80 Ranger and Level 61 Necro) I'd say the first 60 levels now are actually very good fun (now that they have improved lower end content)...however there is a distinct lack of end game atm and server population drops everytime a patch is released. It has plenty of potential but Funcom have a knack of ruining said potential.

Here is an interview by an ex-developer on Aoc.

Apologies for the wall of text but I couldn't find the original link.
I said it before the game was released, and I'll say it again

(Age of) Conan flopped because of management, and then mostly because of Gaute Godager who made major changes on the game in 2006/2007.

If he hadn't done the changes, the game would have been released in october 2007 as planned, and had a standard that supassed WOW, with a lot better graphics to boot. We had everything ready. We even had beta testers praising the game, all we had left was to fix some bugs.

But no. Megalomaniac Gaute had to follow his 'vision' and throw a lot of work overboard, while new teamleaders were promoted. Teamleaders that had no clue of how to direct others, which also meant they didn't get to do any work done themselves inbetween meetings and checking bugzilla to make sure everyone worked at least 10-12 hours on a daily basis.

This was a shame, since many of the new team leaders were excellent workers, which means funcum lost a lot of their expertise as well.

I quit FC last fall.. I couldn't stand it anymore. The work environment went sour, everyone complained and felt abused by the management, and on top of that they had to work overtime without any compensation than a puny meal of pizza or spice.

I work in another design company now with proper work enviroment, and I have a great time.

If anyone should step down in FC, it should be Gaute and a great deal of the team leaders."

Drunken brawling is implemented and working already, but it's not activated. Same with the possibility of raving around intoxicated, we even implemented a whorehouse, and of corpse camel punching was a given.

Most of the "cool" stuff has been deactivated for different reasons, mostly because some guy thought it would be vulgar or it didn't fit in - even if it was implemented according to the design originally approved by the heads.

As I wrote in my OP there is a lot here implemented but discarded because of Gautes visions which weren't always constant.

I got badly burnt with Vanguard. All the same things that people are saying here about AoC applied to Vanguard too when it was released.

If you just want to mess about a bit with MMOs perhaps the offerings from Sony online may be worth looking at. I usually am quite unkind about Sony online but Vanguard must be fairly stable by now. Sony online is a kind of elephant's graveyard for old dying MMOs.

For what its worth I am starting to think it is a mistake to jump onboard any MMO when it first comes out.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Age of Conan is AWWEEEESSOOOMMMMEEE!!!

you can have mine for 10 quid!

id hate you to miss out on its brilliance

MMO's are all the same time and money sinks. Pick a decent no sub fps or rts and play that instead, where you will actually be able to test your gaming skills against other people.

Yeah play a FPS which is full of cheaters and 10 year olds or play a RTS where you have the macro players just spamming buttons and beating you without even moving the mouse.

I suspect it was a play on words. crud-an instead of conan.

You know? Crud? as in crap.

Was a very common word down my way in the 80s, been dying out lately though,

crud : def. any unpleasant external ailment, disorder, or the like, as a skin rash.

Probably in this context its referring to the definition : "something that is worthless, objectionable, or contemptible" more though

you are sad

you are sad

Depends how you look at it really, I take pride in understanding and knowing my language (especially in light of the current trend in todays youth of being unable to seemingly write a single sentence properly..some of the coursework I see handed in at work is utterly shocking)

If I am sad for knowing the meaning of a word, and attempting to help others who might not know the meaning (particularly if its in response to someone actually asking the meaning, as I am comprehending Teki's post), then thank you, I take that as a compliment :)

Aion looks like it could be quite interesting. It's made by the same people who did Guild Wars, City of Heroes etcetera - definitely looks like it has potential. A quick google search should give you some insight.
