Haswell (4th generation) was the last platform to use DDR3 so you will need to upgrade if you're moving off Haswell. It's one of the reasons so many people are sticking with their 4690k/4790k. DDR4 prices are finally coming down a bit but still not cheap.

Honestly single-threaded performance hasn't gone up much from the 4790k, especially if you're overclocking it. Likewise most games aren't utilising more than 4 threads yet. Intel's current top consumer CPU, the i7-8700k, is 6-core with up to about 5GHz clock speed so only a small step up. And if you go over to AMD for more threads, you find clock speed suffers. It's very much dependent on what you're doing with the chip, whether an upgrade makes sense.

That said, i5-8600k and the 8700k are current Intel leaders for gaming.

Try picking up a 2nd hand Z97 board but don't overpay for one. Some people on ebay are asking more for a used board than they were when new. A Z87 board will do the job as well so long as it's been flashed with a bios for the 4790k. Upgrading everything will cost a small fortune for little gain.

I just upgraded from the same CPU and mobo as yours this week when mine started playing up, i went for the 8086k and the gigabyte gaming 7 again. The 8086k is just a better clocking 8700k they released later on, similar to the 4970k been a better clocking 4770k. The mobo seems to be improved quite a bit over the z97 version though, it has active mosfet cooling and temp sensors which are pretty cool allowing me to cool my water loop from the bios rather than using third party software/hardware.

You could try replacing your board if your sure thats the problem, i tried doing the same and i had the same problem with the new board so i would make sure its definitely the problem first, like pastymuncher said the z97 boards go for silly money i was bidding on one which went for £160, they were less than that new.
