New Monitor Decision

If you're coming from 60Hz model then 60Hz 4K would no doubt go as excellent interim solution...
With update from that medieval marketing resolution already providing major wow factor.

But if your current one is 100+ Hz model, then that 60Hz might well feel limiting despite of major image quality boost.
At least if you play faster paced games.

I would like to know what people think of this:

before the new high refresh rate 4k screens people were using 4k 60hz and were I assume perfectly happy playing games including fps on such screens. So if I get a 4k 60hz monitor then it should be ok for games generally even if not as good for frame rates as a 1440p 144hz monitor? I dont play highly competitive games but would like to experience the FPS in Elite Dangerous Odyseey and a few other titles. Will my experience be a bad one at 60hz refresh or will it be acceptably fine just as it has been for other gamers for several years since 4k came out? Because if it is ok then I would prefer 4k to 1440p and this would answer my question. My 3090 would be under-utilised but I have to accept this until I can get my hands on a 4k high refresh rate monitor.

Actually 4K monitors have really existed only for couple years and hence along with extreme GPU load of resolution doubt many gamers have had those.
2560x1600 again has existed long and was that high end choise before higher refresh rates gaming monitors started to appear...
(unfortunately only in downgraded 2560x1440 low screen res)

I am reading that a DP1.2 gpu wont work with a DP1.4 monitor. Is this true? Also lots of monitors have dp 1.2 despite being 1440p 144hz+ rather than dp 1.4. I would apperciate some clarity with regard to Display Ports generally.

Not 100% certain on this, but I think they would still work, but might not be able to drive it at the maximum resolution/refresh rate combo if it's over certain limits.

I've got an LG 38WN95C for example (3840x1600, 144 Hz) and in the menu you can select DisplayPort version 1.4, 1.2 or 1.1.

You can only drive it at its maximum 3840 x 1600 @ 144Hz though over DisplayPort or Thunderbolt - if you connect it via HDMI instead it can only do 3840 x 1600 @ 75Hz

Not true as far as I know, DP is usually backwards compatible. My 27GN950 you can set to DP 1.2, DP1.4 or DP 1.4 with DSC.

Obviously you will be limited by DP 1.2 bandwidth.

If youre buying a 3090 im going to assume money isnt an issue and you should be fine getting a decent 4k 144hz monitor - that should run most games in high frame rates easily. There are lots of options coming out its in the next month or two just watch for reviews.

If you are used to high refresh rate then back to 60hz may feel uncomfortable - I'd go 1440 120hz+ personally from 1080p. Elite dangerous I'd consider an ultrawide.

In fact for elite dangerous I'd go VR for any cockpit game including driving ones. Your 3090 will have DP 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 so right up to date

Seconded on comments re Elite, ultrawide is a good step up, VR is a game changer.
