Hi All,

Looking for a little help.

Getting back into gaming, about to build a new PC most likely will be Coffee Lake i7 with Nvidia 1080ti.

Would you kind folks give me your recommendations for a new monitor.

Willing to spend up to £1000, however like us all would like to only spend what is needed for a quality monitor to last a good few years.

Many thanks

decent refresh rate would be good. Would like at least 1440.
And how big do you want the monitor to be? Most common sizes are 24in or 27in for a high-refresh rate 1440p G-Sync.

35inch 3440x1440p ultrawide would also be an option, but they cost £1k+ and only go to 100hz/120hz. There is a 200hz version releasing soon, but I would be surprised if that was anywhere near £1k.

27” would be minimum in honesty. However I used to like my 29” super wide before. Was only a 1080 though.

Might be interesting to read about the 200hz 35” what price is it thought to cost?

These are the two monitors I'm talking about:

It should launch Q2 of next year and is speculated to be $1500, which basically always means £1500.

AUO Optronics make the panel, but have delayed production. There is no official release date yet.

Linked to the gaming panels are a range of large format curved panels scheduled. Of note are the 35" VA panels with high refresh rate and HDR support. Planned for production in January 2018 is the first panel, with a 3440 x 1440 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 90% DCI-P3 colour space and 600 cd/m2 peak brightness. We believe this will offer a multi-zone (probably 8) edge-lit dimming backlight system for moderate HDR performance and support. More exciting (and one we've seen before) is the 35" 3440 x 1440 resolution, 200Hz refresh rate VA panel. This will offer a 512-zone full-array local dimming backlight, 90% DCI-P3 coverage and 1000 cd/m2 peak brightness for true HDR support. This is the panel which will be featured in a couple of already announced monitors including the Asus ROG Swift PG35VQ and Acer Predator X35. Those were originally expected to be released in Q4 2017 but we have been informed that they are now delayed until at least Q2 2018. That ties in with the fact that the AUO panel production is not now scheduled until Q2 as well.

Potentially 8 months to wait is quite a long time. Up to you really.

For monitors that are available now, your options would be one of the 27in, 1440p, IPS, G-Sync 165hz monitors. These all use the same panel, but all suffer from 'IPS glow' and are notorious for QC control. But overall have good colour accuracy, but do suffer in some gaming scenarios due to slow response times.

The alternative would be the Dell S2716DG, this is a TN monitor that has better response times and better QC than the IPS selection. But, colour accuracy is worse than its IPS counterparts (although this can be improved through proper calibration).
This Dell is usually £100+ cheaper than the IPS screens.

I would go for the Asus PG348Q. It runs at 100Hz without any overclocking. It's not much more than the Acer and honestly I don't think it should be any more (!) but I just happen to find that Asus monitors are very responsive for gaming. They also tend to be setup better than others right out of the box. Just me maybe, but I like them.

Thinking this is leading the options at £899

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £911.09
(includes shipping: £11.10)

So this will most likely be the choice, still not 100% sold on the hz

That would be my pick. 100hz while not as high as 144 hz on other panel's is a nice number to be at and feels a fair bit smoother then 60hz, but the 3440 x 1440 element absolutely transforms games, so those few extra missing hz is well worth it at this point. Fire up witcher 3 with that Ti on this panel, crank up the settings and sit back and enjoy the pinnacle of PCMasterRace (okay slightly cheesy, but still :p:D)

The AOC AGON AG352UCG is another option as is the ASUS PG348Q though latter is overpriced as its effectively the ACER wrapped up in another shell.

That is not true. When your running the panel at 100hz its effectively overclocked also, just like the ACER, 60hz is native for the panel. Likewise for gaming, both perform similar in terms of response times which is not surprising as they both use the same underlying LG panel and are effectively different wrappings. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/asus_rog_swift_pg348q.htm

But the Acer is not a guaranteed 100hz. I've got an x34 that drops the DP with any refresh OC. :( Should've gone for Asus in the first place.

Neither is the ASUS (or happy to be shown a quote or something saying 100hz is guaranteed). My first ASUS could not hit 100hz stable and had to notch down to 95hz along with coil whine. 2 tries later and my current panel is fine. Even get a message to that effect on the ASUS panel when overclocking to drop to safer refresh rate in event of any issues and a message in the manual:

Please note that Over Clocking function/performance depends on the GPUs or contents displayed. ASUS only provides this function. The performance or any side effect after activation is not guaranteed.

You should get 100hz and if you do not I would send it back, more so if you have issues with any refresh rate above 60hz which is what it sounds like your getting which is a pretty serious issue and I would have sent it back.

FYI nothing against the ASUS, it is after all my current panel I am using and am delighted with it, moved from the X34 to it just for looks :p, but just given the price delta between that and the X34 which are the same thing for most the part, imagine jumping for the ASUS if budget is in any way a factor would be crazy when if you get solid panels from either camp are phenomenal.
