Hello,
I have a budget of £150 and I'm looking for a decent monitor.

I want it for gaming and University work, so a 23"+ would be good, definitely 1080p, like it to be LED and have thin bezels.

Any recommendations guys, preferably based on personal experience?
I'm a student after all, not gonna get money like this again for a while :P

A lot round about that price mark are fairly similar in terms of what you will get, but all the more reason for a personal recommendation. I recently (last week) was in the same situation and I got this: Ilyama from this very site and was not disappointed with it at all so far, looks lovely and sharp connected via HDMI.

For that price I would only make one recommendation, the LG IPS231P-BN ...by far the best monitor around £150 ...the difference between it and anything else at that price point is that it uses an IPS panel rather than a TN one, which offers vastly superior viewing angles, better colour reproduction and generally a fast response time ...although response time is the one advantage some TN panels do have ...but really the modern IPS displays are fast enough that this wont be anything you would really notice. What you certainly will notice is the image quality and viewing angles, IPS really is leagues ahead of TN in this regard ...also the LG has the added bonus of having a height adjustable stand ...which is a big advantage ...at least it is as far as I am concerned, you may not thing so though.

If you want to read up on panel techbology Badass has some articles on his website TFT Central

I really think that unless you want one of the cheaper 120Hz monitors for fast paced gaming, none of the TN's are worth it, not with the LG IPS priced at £155 ...actually I have seen them as low as £142 even.

Is the IPS really that important when gaming?

I just want a large, crisp screen, good whites and blacks.

how bout this one?

You better remove those links fast, before a moderator seems them, you aren't allowed to link to other retailers here. It's all in the forum rules ...under promotion of competitors.

As for IPS being important for gaming ...well no not really, it's more of a case of if you haven't seen one you don't know what you are missing ...most people that do buy an IPS or VA display say they will never go back to a TN. The only real reason I can think of to buy a TN display is if you want a 120hz monitor, which really are supposed to be very good for fast paced gaming.

It does have HDCP yes, but it does not have an HDMI port, just a DVI and VGA. Assuming you don't want to juggle connections you are going to need a different monitor then.

Pssst, get rid of those links, or you're going to be getting a holiday in all likelihood.

Arhh nevermind this port, I just noticed the Asus does not have a DVI and HDMI connector, it just has HDMI but provides you with an HDMI-DVI cable. So this isn;t suitable to connect both your computer and ps3 to at the same time.

Yea, those response times don't actually mean as much as the marketting blurb leads you to believe really, a modern IPS with overdrive is fast enough.

However the Asus doesn't meet your connection requirements, I realised when I looked more closely at the spec.

There was an LG for around your budget, a TN but 120Hz model that's been all the rage among hardcore gamers of late, it doesn't seem to be available at OcUK anymore but that probably has DVI and HDMI ...I'll see if I can find the model number.

Edit - I believe it was the LG W2363D ...however availability all over the place seems to be drying up now, perhaps they are about to release a new model or something, I'm not sure. Not really the sort of monitors I tend to pay much attention to tbh.

No worries, as a monitor I really don't think you'll regret it, however juggling inputs will no doubt be annoying, you can probably get a switch box or something for that though, just make sure it can pass HDCP.

Attaching the PS3 was just an extra, I got my 32" TV on my desk, its 1080i but I've only got like 3 games that take >720p.

Monitor should be here tomorrow, I feel like a kid :)

Arhh well then, if you have a tv for it you've made the right choice for you budget I think.

I got my Dell u2412m earlier too, and I am very pleased with it :) ...it's nice to get new toys.
